Overview

A combination of classic design and modern technology, the Open Box Rocket Espresso Mozzafiato Evoluzione R ushers in the next generation of high end home espresso machines. From a distance, the classic polished steel case and large E61 group resemble espresso machines made since the '60s. But on closer inspection, the Open Box Mozzafiato's modern side panels and carefully concealed digital components reveal its modern-classic pedigree. Temperature control is managed by a PID controller mounted behind the drip tray, ensuring quiet, efficient operation. Other niceties include a low-profile shot timer mounted in the front face, an insulated boiler, and optional plumbing thanks to an internal rotary pump.

Rocket Espresso
Rocket Espresso produces hand built espresso machines featuring classic elements of Italian design. With heated E61 groupheads that ensure even extraction, to elements like rotary pumps and PID controllers, Rocket Espresso machines are some of the most sophisticated on the market. These machines represent the closest you can get to bringing the Italian cafe to your countertop.

Making great flat whites and having fun doing it!

What fun! Moving from a semiautomatic with push buttons to levers and knobs gave a new meaning to "hands on" for me, At first I thought I must have received a pre-chrono model because I didn't see the little timer above the switch. But the shiny surface gives way to dim numbers which count the seconds from the time the handle is in the full infusion position. Unfortunately it disappears shortly after pulling the shot. I would drop a star for that except that I don't use it anyway. But I hope for future models that the counder stays lighted long enough to get into position to read it before it disappears. The warming tray actually warms the cups. It's easy to check the water level by lifting the cover, a ritual I perform so that I never try to pull a shot with an empty water reservoir. The infusion handle easily controls start and stop of the infusion. Currently I don't use the pre-infusion position but I may later for fine tuning my routine. Steaming is fast, I mean fast! And it's nice that the steam wand isn't hot to touch. The hot water wand delivers very hot, some might say too hot, water but it's there if you need it. If I use it for my wife's instant cocoa, I give it a short blast then add cold milk or cream so she doesn't need to wait hours to safely drinik it. The drip tray holds plenty so you have to remember to empty it on occasion because it's not necessary after each flat white. I've not made two in a row yet, not have I steamed milk while pulling my double shot because I'm concentrating on getting the grind and timing just right. But unlike the semi-automatic I was using, there's no wait between pulling the infusion and steaming the milk--that steam is right there ready when I am. We have very hard well water which sometimes carries particulate matter so I use a water filter pitcher and use only filtered water in the machine. Of course it's an impressive and beautiful machine that stays put.

I would recommend: A minimalist design and function with great results.

Excellent machine. It’s the “Apple” of espresso machines, a minimalist design and function with great results. Build quality is very high with a sturdy construction that makes it very heavy (partly the rotary pump). I drink lattes and cappuccinos, so I’m steaming for each drink. It has a lot of steam power as long as you give it time to warm-up (25-30min). With the built-in tank I could get about 8-10 drinks (including cleaning the steam wand and group between shots) before refilling the water. I will be pluming in at some point. I would suggest the plumed in version as it is more convenient, unless you don’t have a water source available where you are placing the machine. I can’t find any negatives for this machine. I would give two pieces of advice, which is not specific to this machine. Don’t touch (bump against) the group head when on, wow it’s hot, and it doesn’t hurt to buy the Fausto too. When I received my Mozzafiato I had not upgraded my grinder yet. The espresso was great, but there was a huge difference with a better grinder, don’t go cheap on the grinder. The Fausto is made with the same Rocket quality and design. Notice they both fit under my 18” cabinets. Don’t be intimidated, just watch Seattle Coffee Gear’s videos, order one and have fun.
