Do you have a special relationship with your Silvia? Give her only the best. Upgrade the steam wand on your version 1 or version 2 Rancilio Silvia espresso machine with the commercial grade steaming arm from the latest Silvia model, version 3. This new arm is heavier duty and swivels much more than the original arm.
Watch the video for an idea of what is involved in replacing the current wand. If you are not comfortable doing this upgrade yourself, we recommend that you take your Silvia to your local espresso machine repair shop to have the replacement arm installed. We cannot provide technical assistance for this upgrade, although we would be happy to install this for you in our repair center.
One of the problems I have with the v2 steaming wand is that the knob has to turn so far to be fully opened, over two full rotations. When I'm steaming small quantities of milk (130mL or so), it's a really significant fraction of the total steaming time, and in the meantime my "pitcher hand" is unstable. From what I've seen in videos, it seems like the v3 only takes a half turn or so to be fully engaged; is that true?
Best Answer:Not true. V3 steaming wand works the same as V1, V2. With practice, you should be able to get the froth you want. For me, I start about 1/4" from bottom of pitcher and leave it there until I feel heat. Then I gradually move up until I reach just below the top of the milk. As it starts to bubble I move the pitcher down. ONE MORE THING: don't be cheap with the amount of milk you need 1/2 pitcher for the job.
Yes. The V3 steam wand only needs 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn of the knob to provide plenty of steam. I've been able to consistently get lots of microfoam with skim, 1%, 2% and full-fat goat milk, which I couldn't do with the V2 wand.I am very happy I made the upgrade.
Yes, my wand only requires only requires a quarter or half a turn to to create enough steam to steam well. I might check how well the wand was tightened when you replaced it. That may be the reason it is not engaging as it should.
I recently replaced my original steam wand with this new model. I don't have to turn it more than half a turn to get all the steam I need. (FYI - I didn't have the problem that you seem to have with my original wand)
Is this wand a 'cool touch' wand? Is the outer surface heat insulated in any way?
A shopper on Mar 27, 2016
Best Answer:The wand is solid metal and will get quite hot to the touch because steam is moving through it. There is a small amount of insulation through the rubber flex in the middle, but, in general, I would not touch it.
Hi, I have a V2 and looking to upgrade. Can you tell me how long the wand would be once installed? From the tip at the bottom up to the unit? It looks like the tip reaches almost down to the tray so I can measure myself but want to make sure it reaches that far actually. thanks
Unfortunately, I cannot give this product 5 stars. It turns out that new steamer knob is not quite up to the quality of the old style knob. Mine broke relatively quickly, so the old one is back and still going strong.
The steam wand the best value. It is a real, functional improvement over the old one. Had a little challenge installing it. I absolutely love it! (Posted on 7/21/2015)
Good videoReview by Alan
Upgrade is very easy to do. The only thing the video does not mention is that you will probably need two wrenches to take the steam wand off the fitting prior to installation. Rancilio should furnish the kit with the wand off the fitting or not tighten it so much since you will need to take it off before installing. (Posted on 7/12/2015)

A very nice upgradeReview by Kevin
While it is a bit pricey, it's a nice upgrade. Installation was easy, and the video was very useful. I got my kit in two days (way over on the east coast) even after selecting free shipping (your results may vary, I probably was a bit lucky) (Posted on 12/4/2012)
