What's In The Box
Brewing Vessel, Filter Basket, Silicone Lid, Tongs, 12 Paper Filters

Setup & First Use

Before using your Toddy Artisan for the first time, wash all reusable parts — the brewing vessel, filter basket, silicone lid, and tongs — in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry before brewing.

Your First Brew

Choose your brew strength before you begin. The Toddy Artisan supports two ratios:

  • Ready to Drink: 35 g (approx. 5–7 tablespoons) ground coffee to 400 mL (13.5 oz.) cool, filtered water
  • Concentrate: 50 g (approx. 8–10 tablespoons) ground coffee to 500 mL (17 oz.) cool, filtered water

For best results, use metric measurements and a coarse grind. Cool, filtered water is recommended.

Brewing Steps

  1. Fill: Gently place an open paper filter inside the brewing vessel. Pour your ground coffee into the filter, then add the water in a slow circular motion to ensure even saturation. Twist the top of the filter closed, then position the silicone lid on top.
  2. Brew: Allow the coffee to steep at room temperature for 8 to 24 hours. A longer steep produces a bolder result.
  3. Filter: Once brewing is complete, use the tongs to grasp the twisted top of the filter bag and lift it out. Place the filter basket into the brewing vessel, then set the spent filter and grounds into the basket and allow it to drain fully before discarding.
  4. Serve: Enjoy your cold brew immediately, or secure the lid and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. If you brewed a concentrate, dilute to taste with water or milk, or use it as a base in cocktail and mocktail recipes.

Tutorials & Training

Choosing Your Brew Strength

The Toddy Artisan is designed for small-batch cold brewing with two distinct output styles. A ready-to-drink ratio (35 g coffee / 400 mL water) produces a smoother, lighter brew you can pour directly over ice. A concentrate ratio (50 g coffee / 500 mL water) yields a bold, dense base that you dilute to taste — typically 1:1 with water or milk. Concentrate is also the starting point for cold brew cocktails and mocktails.

Getting Your Grind Right

Use a coarse grind for cold brew — similar to what you'd use for a French press. A finer grind will over-extract during the long steep and can make filtering difficult or slow. If your cold brew tastes bitter or takes an unusually long time to drain through the filter, your grind is likely too fine.

Steep Time and Temperature

Steep at room temperature for anywhere between 8 and 24 hours. Shorter steep times (8–12 hours) produce a lighter, brighter cup. Longer steep times (18–24 hours) produce a richer, more intense result. Once brewed, the Toddy Artisan's sealed silicone lid keeps your cold brew fresh in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Using Compatible Filters

The Toddy Artisan ships with 12 paper filters and is compatible with Toddy® SB Filters and Toddy® Cupping Kit Filters. Each paper filter is single-use — discard with the spent grounds after draining. Use the included tongs to handle the filter safely after a long steep; do not squeeze or press the filter bag to speed up draining, as this can push fine particles through.

Making Cold Brew Concentrate Drinks

Cold brew concentrate is a versatile ingredient beyond just iced coffee. A few starting points from Toddy's own recipe guides:

  • Thai Iced Coffee: 120 mL concentrate, 60 mL half-and-half, ¼ tsp cardamom, over ice.
  • Cold Brew & Tonic: 60 mL concentrate poured slowly over 200 mL tonic water and a large ice cube. Garnish with grapefruit zest.
  • Cold Brew Martini: 60 mL concentrate, 20 mL vanilla syrup, 20 mL coffee liqueur, shaken and strained. Garnish with three coffee beans and orange zest.

Cleaning & Maintenance

This item can safely be cleaned in a commercial dishwasher. All components are made from durable, food-safe, dishwasher-safe materials (although for the longest life, we suggest hand-washing).

Troubleshooting

Cold Brew Is Taking Too Long to Filter

Slow drainage is almost always caused by a grind that is too fine. Cold brew requires a coarse grind — similar to a French press. If your grind is producing a lot of fine particles, they will clog the paper filter and significantly slow drainage. Try a coarser grind setting on your next batch. Do not press or squeeze the filter bag to speed up the process, as this pushes sediment through into your finished brew.

Cold Brew Tastes Bitter or Harsh

Over-extraction is the most common cause of bitterness in cold brew. This can result from a grind that is too fine, a steep time that is too long, or both. Try reducing your steep time (aim for 12–16 hours as a starting point) and make sure you are using a coarse grind. Using warm or hot water instead of cool, filtered water will also over-extract the coffee rapidly — always use cool or room-temperature water for the Toddy Artisan.

Cold Brew Tastes Weak or Flat

If your ready-to-drink cold brew tastes thin, try extending your steep time toward the 20–24 hour range, or switch to the concentrate ratio (50 g coffee / 500 mL water) and dilute to taste after brewing. Also check that your coffee was ground coarsely but not so coarsely that water is passing through without proper extraction.

Sediment in the Finished Brew

Some fine sediment is normal with paper-filtered cold brew, especially if your grind includes fine particles. Make sure the filter is fully twisted closed before steeping, and allow it to drain completely into the filter basket before serving. If sediment is a consistent problem, check that you are using a compatible Toddy filter (Toddy® SB Filters or Toddy® Cupping Kit Filters) and that the filter is not torn or damaged before use.

Silicone Lid Doesn't Seal Properly

The silicone lid should press firmly onto the rim of the brewing vessel. If it feels loose or is not seating correctly, check that the rim of the vessel is clean and free of coffee grounds or residue. Rinse and dry the rim before attaching the lid. If the lid appears warped or damaged after 30 days of use, contact Toddy directly at +1 (970) 493-0788 or via ToddyCafe.com for replacement parts.
