FAQ
Choose a French press for full-bodied coffee, flexible batch sizes, and a straightforward steep-and-press process. Choose a moka pot for smaller servings of concentrated coffee brewed on the stove. Both use reusable metal filtration. The aluminum Bialetti Moka Express does not work directly on induction cooktops, so check compatibility before purchasing.
Start with the brewer and coffee ground for your brewing method. A French press is an easy starting point if avoiding paper filters is your priority. Choose our beginner-friendly pour over coffee makers if you prefer hands-on pouring, but check their filter requirements. Add one of our grinders for French press and pour over when you want freshly ground beans, or one of our coffee scales for espresso and pour over when you want more consistent measurements. Neither upgrade needs to be part of your first brewer purchase.
Use the included mesh filter and start with coarsely ground coffee. Add hot water, gently stir to wet the grounds, and steep for about four minutes as a starting point. Press slowly without forcing the plunger, then pour the brewed coffee into your mug or a separate serving vessel so it does not keep steeping with the grounds.
Metal mesh lets some fine coffee particles through, so a little sediment is normal. For a cleaner cup, use a more even, coarse grind, press gently, and pour slowly. Leave the last splash in the carafe. If you see unusually large amounts of grounds, check that the filter is assembled correctly and the mesh is not damaged.
Let the brewer cool, then dispose of grounds in the trash or compost rather than washing them down the drain. Rinse away trapped particles and clean removable filter pieces according to the manufacturer's directions. The OXO French Press with Lift is dishwasher safe. Hand-rinse the aluminum Moka Express with water and dry it thoroughly; do not put it in the dishwasher.
Excessive heat or coffee ground too finely can make moka pot coffee harsh. Use a moka-suitable grind, gentler heat, and remove the pot from the heat when the flow begins to sputter. Fill the grounds basket loosely and level it without tamping. Keep the water below the safety valve, and never open the pot while it is hot or pressurized.
