FAQs
Look for a quality steam wand, adjustable steam control, a portafilter suited to your skill level, and a brew system that provides consistent espresso extraction. A machine with a dedicated hot water outlet can also make it easier to prepare Americanos and tea.
Fill a stainless steel pitcher with cold milk, keeping the level below the spout. Place the steam wand just beneath the surface to introduce air, then lower the pitcher slightly to create a smooth whirlpool. Stop steaming when the milk is hot and silky, then tap and swirl the pitcher before pouring.
Both drinks combine espresso and steamed milk, but their proportions and texture differ. A cappuccino typically has a smaller volume with more noticeable foam, while a latte contains more steamed milk and a thinner layer of microfoam.
A dedicated espresso grinder gives you precise control over grind size, which helps you dial in the coffee for your machine. Choose a burr grinder with fine adjustment settings so you can make small changes as needed.
Purge and wipe the steam wand immediately after steaming milk. Rinse the portafilter and basket, flush the group head, and empty the drip tray as needed. Follow the machine’s care instructions for backflushing and descaling to keep the brewing system in good working order.
