FAQs
Look for a steam wand or an automatic milk system, adjustable espresso settings, and easy-to-clean milk components. Manual steam wands let you control milk texture, while automatic systems simplify preparation. Dual-boiler and heat-exchanger machines typically let you brew espresso and steam milk at the same time.
Semi-automatic machines put you in charge of grinding, dosing, tamping, and usually steaming milk. Superautomatic machines handle grinding and brewing internally, and many also prepare milk automatically. Choose based on whether you enjoy hands-on preparation or prefer a more automated morning routine.
Start with cold milk in a frothing pitcher and briefly purge the steam wand. Position the tip just below the milk’s surface to introduce air, then lower it slightly to create a rolling motion that blends the bubbles. Aim for glossy, pourable foam rather than stiff, dry bubbles. Follow your machine’s manual for steam controls and wand positioning.
Large bubbles often develop when the steam wand tip sits too far above the milk’s surface or introduces air for too long. Keep the tip just below the surface during aeration, then move it slightly deeper to maintain a rolling motion. After steaming, gently tap and swirl the pitcher to smooth out remaining bubbles.
For a manual steam wand, wipe the exterior with a dedicated damp cloth and purge it after each use. For automatic milk systems, run the recommended rinse cycle and clean removable milk-contact parts as directed. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule for deeper cleaning, using a milk-system cleaner when specified.
