Place the dripper over your mug, fit the recommended filter, and add freshly ground coffee. Pour a little hot water over the grounds to wet them evenly, pause briefly, then continue pouring slowly in circles. Let the water drain through before removing the dripper.
Start with a medium-fine to medium grind, following your dripper’s brewing guidance. If the water drains very slowly, try a slightly coarser setting. If it rushes through, try a slightly finer setting. A burr grinder helps keep the grounds consistent as you make adjustments.
Blooming is the initial step of wetting the coffee grounds and pausing before continuing your pour. Freshly roasted coffee releases gas when it meets hot water, which can make the grounds bubble and rise. Wet all the grounds, then wait about 30 to 45 seconds before continuing.
A gooseneck kettle is optional, but its narrow spout gives you more control over where and how quickly you pour. With a standard kettle, pour gently and keep the stream steady. Aim to wet the grounds evenly rather than pouring directly onto the filter walls.
Discard the used grounds and rinse the dripper after each brew. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for washing, including whether dish soap or a dishwasher is appropriate. Clean reusable filters as directed, and let all components dry fully before storing.
