Your portafilter and basket are in contact with hot coffee every extraction. Keeping them clean is one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do for your espresso quality.
Coffee oils coat the inside of the portafilter body and basket with every shot. Left to build up, those oils go rancid — and rancid oil in the portafilter flavors every shot you pull. The routine is simple, takes very little time, and makes a genuine difference in the cup.

The Daily Rinse
After each shot, knock out the puck, then rinse the basket and portafilter with hot water immediately. A quick scrub of the basket interior with a brush or your finger under running water removes fresh grounds and oils while they're still easy to clear. Don't use soap after every shot — for daily use, rinse water is sufficient, and soap residue can add off-flavors to subsequent shots.
Weekly Soak
Once a week, soak the portafilter basket in hot water with Cafiza or a similar espresso cleaning powder — roughly one tablespoon per liter. Soak for 20 to 30 minutes. Scrub with a soft brush, paying attention to the small holes in the basket floor. Rinse thoroughly — multiple passes — until the water runs clear and there's no chemical smell remaining.
What to Use
Cafiza and Puly Caff are reliable options for portafilter and basket cleaning. Avoid household cleaners, bleach, or anything not rated for food-contact surfaces. Use a soft-bristle brush — a dedicated espresso cleaning brush or a clean toothbrush works well on basket holes. Browse our full range of espresso cleaning supplies if you're stocking up.
Signs They Need Attention
If the portafilter smells stale even after rinsing, it needs a soak. If shots start tasting flat or dull despite freshly dialed coffee, the portafilter is worth checking. A clean basket and portafilter pull cleaner, more transparent shots — the difference is noticeable if you taste before and after a proper deep clean.
What Not to Do
Don't soak portafilter handles in strong Cafiza solution — it can damage rubber handles or strip coatings with prolonged exposure. Remove the basket from the portafilter body and soak the basket alone. Don't use metal scrubbers on baskets; they scratch the surface and can damage basket geometry over time. And don't skip the final rinse after soaking — cleaner residue is just as damaging to flavor as the oil buildup you were cleaning off. It also tastes terrible!
