Why Is My Espresso Machine Steaming Poorly?

An overhead shot of a latte with latte art with text reading SCG Fix: Espresso Machine Isn't Steaming

Weak steam, excessive sputtering, or milk that won't texture properly usually points to one of a few fixable causes. Here's how to work through them.

Poor steaming performance is frustrating, especially when the espresso side of the machine is working fine. The steam and brewing systems often run off separate components, so a steaming problem doesn't necessarily mean the whole machine needs service.

Clogged Steam Wand Tip

The most common cause of weak or wet steam is a partially blocked wand tip. Dried milk inside the tip holes restricts flow and drops pressure. Remove the tip (most unscrew counter-clockwise from below), soak it in Rinza milk cleaner for 15 to 20 minutes, then use a needle or pin to clear each hole individually. Rinse thoroughly and reinstall. Use Rinza — not Cafiza — for anything with milk contact. Rinza is formulated specifically to break down milk proteins and fats; Cafiza is for coffee residue only.

Not Purging Before Steaming

If you don't purge the wand before steaming, condensed water inside the wand releases as wet, low-pressure steam that won't properly aerate milk. Always open the steam valve for one to two seconds into the drip tray before submerging the wand in milk. This clears condensation and ensures you're working with dry, high-pressure steam from the start.

Single-Boiler Timing

On single-boiler machines, the boiler switches between brew temperature (around 200°F) and steam temperature (above 250°F). If you try to steam too quickly after pulling a shot, the boiler hasn't had time to fully reach steam pressure. Wait for the steam indicator light or temperature reading to confirm the boiler is ready — rushing this step produces exactly the weak, wet steam people often blame on the wand tip.

Scale Buildup on the Heating Element

Heavy scale buildup inside the boiler insulates the heating element, preventing it from reaching full steam pressure. If steaming has progressively worsened over time and descaling is overdue, run a descaling cycle if your machine and manual suggest it. Many steaming problems that seem mechanical resolve completely after a thorough descale. Note that prosumer machines with heat exchangers or dual boilers — including Rocket Espresso and some LELIT models — should be descaled by a qualified technician, not at home, as descaling solution can become trapped in complex water circuits.

When to Call for Service

If the steam wand tip is clear, the boiler is fully heated, you're purging correctly, and the machine is freshly descaled but steaming is still poor, the issue may be a failing steam valve, a pressure stat problem, or a worn boiler seal. These require service. Contact the manufacturer or submit a service request with our repair team.
