Small Footprint, Smart Design

The true selling points here are value and footprint. While the brew unit on the Demi is smaller than the TK-02, it still manages to produce some exceptional coffee for the size and price. At just 7.5” wide, the Demi isn’t just smaller than its sister machine, it’s smaller than many drip brewers. An impressive accomplishment for a machine with a grinder built in. Other design elements, like the dot matrix screen, give this machine a cohesive, retro-futuristic feel that will be right at home on many modern countertops.

What It Can (and Can't) Brew

The Terra Kaffe Demi does have a more limited drink list than the TK-02 due to its lack of a milk frother. The recipes out of the box are an espresso, a lungo (essentially a long shot of espresso), an americano (which differs from a lungo as it’s a shot with water added), a drip coffee setting, and hot water. This means you won’t find lattes or cappuccinos here. It’s also worth noting that the Demi doesn’t have a pass-through chute for pre-ground coffee due to its size. Because of its simple nature, Terra Kaffe has also omitted app based controls for this machine. While these items read as downsides, they’re part of the compromise for that lower price point and smaller footprint.

Grind & Dose Specs

The internal grinder features 5 different grind settings that you can adjust to find the right flavor profile for your coffee. This makes it much easier to dial-in than a separate grinder, but you of course lose the control that you’d have with a more manual setup (which is the case with any automatic machine). Beans are loaded on top, and the 1.4L water tank is filled from the back of the machine.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning the Demi is pretty simple. You can remove the brew unit for easy upkeep, and the machine uses its lights to indicate when maintenance is needed, with indicators for standard cleaning routines, descaling, water filter changes, and brew unit rinses. Like most superautos, the Demi has an auto-rinsing system, but you can manually trigger a rinse in the menus as well.

Who This Machine Is For

The Terra Kaffe Demi will fit best with coffee drinkers who love a black coffee, or who prefer iced milk drinks without needing the frothing capabilities of a milk system (it’s easy to add some ice and milk to a shot from the Demi for an iced latte). You also get a machine that’s simple to use and maintain, with everything controlled from the unit itself. If you’re someone who likes having a full range of milk drink options, or if you like extensive customization and control afforded by an app connection, this machine might not be for you.
