Overview

Get your grind on with the Baratza Encore ESP Pro Espresso Grinder. An even more espresso specialized version of the Encore, the ESP Pro changes up the format with stepless grind adjust and either hopper-fed or single dosing modes to match any setup. Choose hopper mode if you plan to keep the same coffee ready to grind full-time. Set your digital grind setting and grind time for easy, repeatable shots. For more granular control, go single dose. Swap the hopper for the single dose cap, and add the exact amount of beans you want to grind—the ESP Pro will stop grinding automatically once it senses you are out of beans. Other niceties include a feed control disk that regulates the bean flow rate, an optional dosing cup for either 53 or 58mm portafilters, and barista lights to watch your grind. The Encore ESP Pro brings everything you need to grind for espresso and brew both.

The grinder works great. No complaints. The half step grind adjustment is a winner, as it helps me fine tune the flavor of the espresso produced by the Rancilio Silva machine!

Thanks to Alex in sales for recommending this grinder, instead of the other Baratza grinder which I had initially planned to buy. He was very helpful in general in deciding what to buy - both the grinder and the espresso machine.

The Grinder We Need.

Maybe the perfect grinder for those passionate but not obsessed with brewing coffee. The step-less grind settings allow me to easily dial in my weekend espressos with ease then switch back to a coarser grind for my weekday pour overs. Grinding is quick and consistent with very little static build up. Retention is not a problem. For espresso grinds retention is less than 0.5 grams and for pour over about 0.1 gram. While the grinder isn't exactly inexpensive, it's a great bargain compared to some of the other much pricier options on the market.

New Grinder offsets old barista.

Arrived with issues, but Baratza sent a replacement as soon as I ran the tests they requested. I am getting much more consistent grinds and can dial in as needed to account for age of beans or opening a new bag. Espresso station is under a cabinet so it also helps that the grinder and hopper are shorter than the previous grinder for easier filling.

Issues out of the box

My first grinder would only brew espresso in my machine between grind setting 39 and 41. It also would get beans stuck consistently in the popcorn shield. I found another review describing the same grid setting problem and ended up getting a replacement from Baratza. The new machine is quieter, adjusts easier, and has a wider grind setting range that works with my espresso machine.Retention is quite low and static level are decent. It's medium-loud and has a lid for single dose with is nice. I got it because I wanted to brew espresso and pour over with a single grinder. It seems like a good grinder but the quality control from Baratza is clearly not there.

Overpriced, requires dedicated outlet, and I dislike

A month into use and not using especially oily beans, I've had to tap or shake the unit when beans got stuck and did not continuously flow into the grinding chamber. This foretells frequent washing of the bean reservoir ahead because it's hard to believe rapping on the top of the unit is good for the unit's longevity. The light on the grind bin is cute but not necessary. That could have been left off and still I'd say the unit is way overpriced. Also, because the settings are electronic, you can't unplug the unit without losing the settings. I replaced a 10yo Bodum burr grinder, today new on sale for $80, every bit as good, more stylish w/a larger bean reservoir that never stuck. A big plus of the Bodum is settings are manual, so it can be unplugged without loss. A pebble got caught in mine that I mistook as failure by then it was too late to cancel my order, so I kept the unit. Worse, Seattle Coffee Gear says Baratza longevity might be 7 years.
