AeroPress XL Coffee Maker

AeroPress XL Coffee Maker

Press to your heart's content with the AeroPress XL Coffee Maker. Designed to brew double the volume of the original AeroPress, the XL features a wider and taller brew cylinder with a 20-ounce capacity perfect for brewing for two. Built from the same sturdy material as its smaller counterpart, the AeroPress Xl will keep you brewing for years of use. Includes brewer, scoop, stir paddle, 100 filters, and a 20-ounce carafe. Does not fit flow control or Prismo accessory caps.

What's In The Box
AeroPress XL chamber, Plunger with seal, Filter cap, XL stirrer, Coffee scoop, 20 oz Tritan carafe, 100 XL paper micro-filters

Setup & First Use

Before first use, wash all components with warm water and mild dish soap and rinse thoroughly. All AeroPress XL parts are dishwasher safe on the top rack, including the Tritan carafe.

The AeroPress XL brews 2–4 cups (up to 20 oz) per press — twice the capacity of the Original. It uses XL-size paper micro-filters, which are larger than standard AeroPress filters and not interchangeable with them. Standard AeroPress filters will not properly seal the larger XL filter cap. Always use XL filters with the XL.

The included 20 oz Tritan carafe is crystal-clear, shatter-resistant, and BPA-free. Always press into the included carafe or a sturdy, thick-walled mug. Do not press the AeroPress XL into any glass mugs or glass carafes — the XL generates more downward force than the Original, and glass can crack or shatter.

Heat water to 175–205°F (80–96°C). Because the XL holds more water and produces more cups, a larger kettle (at least 24 oz) is recommended so you don't run short mid-brew.

Tutorials & Training

Brewing 2–4 Cups

Insert an XL paper filter into the filter cap, wet it, and screw the cap onto the chamber. Set the AeroPress XL over the included carafe. Add 2–4 rounded scoops of medium-fine ground coffee (approximately 28–56g depending on desired strength and number of cups). Pour hot water to your desired fill line — the chamber is marked with volume indicators. Stir for 10–15 seconds, insert the plunger, and press over 30–45 seconds with steady, even pressure. Stop when you hear the hissing sound indicating the brew is complete.

Inverted Method for the XL

The inverted method works with the XL, but exercise extra care when flipping — the larger, heavier XL filled with hot water requires a secure grip and a confident, deliberate flip. Use both hands and flip over a sink or stable surface, not over the open carafe, in case of any spill.

Scaling the Recipe

The XL's larger capacity makes it easy to brew for a group. A useful starting ratio is 1 rounded scoop (about 14–15g) of coffee per 6–8 oz of water. For 4 cups at 8 oz each (32 oz total), the XL can be pressed in two batches. Alternatively, use 2–3 scoops and fill to the max line for a full 20 oz batch — adjust dose to taste.

Espresso-Style Concentrate

For a concentrated espresso-style shot, use a finely ground coffee and half the usual water volume. Press slowly and firmly. The resulting concentrate can be drunk as-is or topped with hot water for an Americano or steamed milk for a latte-style drink.

Cold Brew

AeroPress can also make cold brew concentrate in about 2 minutes rather than the usual 12–24 hours. Use room-temperature or cold water and fine-ground coffee. Steep for 2 minutes, then press over a glass of ice. The result is a smooth, low-acid cold concentrate.

Grind Size and Coffee Ratio

Medium-fine is the all-purpose starting point for AeroPress — similar to table salt. Finer grinds increase strength and extraction (use for espresso-style); coarser grinds produce a lighter, more tea-like cup. AeroPress is very forgiving: adjust grind size and dose to taste. Fresh beans ground just before brewing make the biggest difference in cup quality.

Water Temperature

AeroPress works across a wide temperature range. For lighter roasts and delicate single-origin coffees, 200–205°F (93–96°C) brings out bright acidity and floral notes. For medium and dark roasts, 175–195°F (80–90°C) produces a sweeter, less bitter cup. Experiment to find what works best with your specific coffee.

Filter Options

AeroPress paper micro-filters produce a clean, bright cup with no sediment. AeroPress-compatible metal reusable filters allow more oils and fine particles through for a fuller-bodied, French press-like result with more texture. Metal filters are available as an accessory and are dishwasher safe.

Cleaning & Maintenance

After Each Brew

Cleaning the AeroPress is one of its greatest practical advantages. After pressing, unscrew the filter cap and hold the AeroPress over a trash bin or compost. Push the plunger all the way through — it ejects the used coffee puck cleanly as a compact disc. Rinse the plunger seal and the inside of the chamber briefly with water. The plunger wipes the chamber nearly clean as it passes through, so extensive rinsing is rarely needed.

Periodic Deep Clean

Remove the rubber plunger seal from the plunger tip periodically and wash it with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. Wash the chamber and filter cap the same way. All AeroPress components are dishwasher safe on the top rack. Allow all parts to dry fully before storage.

Filter Cap

Rinse the filter cap after every use to prevent coffee oil buildup in the filter seat. If the cap develops a film over time, soak it briefly in warm soapy water and scrub with a soft brush.

Paper Filters

Paper filters can be rinsed and reused several times. After pressing, remove the used filter and puck together, rinse the filter under clean water, and place it back in the filter cap for the next brew. Discard when the filter develops tears or significant discoloration.

Storage

Store the AeroPress assembled or disassembled — either is fine. Avoid storing with the rubber seal compressed against the inside of the chamber for extended periods, as this can degrade the seal over time. If storing long-term, remove the plunger fully from the chamber.

Troubleshooting

Coffee Too Bitter or Too Strong

Use a coarser grind, lower water temperature (try 185–195°F), or reduce steep time. Also reduce the coffee dose or increase water volume. Bitter coffee is almost always over-extracted — coarser grind and shorter steep are the quickest fixes.

Coffee Too Weak or Sour

Use a finer grind, hotter water, a longer steep, or increase the coffee dose. Sour or under-developed flavors indicate under-extraction — finer grind and hotter water are the most effective adjustments.

Plunger Hard to Press / Resistance Too High

Grind is too fine, coffee dose is too high, or the plunger seal has dried out. Try a slightly coarser grind or reduce the dose by 1–2g. If the seal is the issue, dampen it lightly with water before inserting the plunger. Never force the plunger — slow, steady pressure over 20–30 seconds is correct. Forcing causes grounds bypass and bitter flavors.

Coffee Dripping Through Before Pressing

This is normal with paper filters if brewing in the standard (upright) position — a small amount of drip-through before pressing is expected. If excessive, ensure the filter is properly seated and the filter cap is fully screwed on. Switch to the inverted method to eliminate any pre-press drip entirely.

Plunger Seal Worn or Leaking

The rubber plunger seal is a wear part that typically lasts 1–3 years depending on use. If the seal feels stiff, cracks, or no longer creates a firm seal against the chamber walls, it's time to replace it. Replacement seals are available directly from AeroPress.

Paper Filter Tears During Press

Pressing too fast or too hard is the most common cause. Use slow, steady pressure — 20–30 seconds for a full press. Check that the filter cap is fully and evenly tightened. Avoid using damaged or very old filters.

XL Filter Not Sealing Properly

Ensure you are using XL-size AeroPress filters, not standard-size filters. Standard filters are smaller and will not seal against the XL filter cap correctly, causing grounds to bypass into the carafe. Only AeroPress XL filters or XL-compatible third-party metal filters should be used with the XL.
