What's In The Box
Technivorm Moccamaster KBT coffee maker, Double-walled stainless steel thermal carafe with Brew-Thru Lid and Travel Lid, Power cord. Note: Standard #4 cone paper filters required — not included. Available at seattlecoffeegear.com.

Setup & First Use

Place the KBT on a level, water-resistant surface. Fill the water reservoir by lifting the lid and pouring cold, filtered water up to the 1.25L / 40oz (10 cups) maximum fill line. Do not exceed the max fill line. Plug in and flip the on/off switch to start — there are no programmable settings or timers on the KBT. The thermoblock heats water to 196–205°F and begins brewing in about 4–6 minutes.

Use a standard #4 cone-shaped paper filter. Fold the seam of the filter before inserting to help it seat flat in the basket. Add medium-ground coffee at approximately 6 grams per 5oz of water (or use the SCG-standard guideline of roughly 1 rounded tablespoon per 5–6oz). The Moccamaster is SCA Gold Cup certified — brewing within the recommended ratio and at correct temperature delivers ideal extraction.

The KBT has a manual-adjust drip-stop on the brew basket. Rotate the valve to control flow speed or stop it entirely. This allows you to pull a cup mid-brew and gives more hands-on control over extraction rate compared to the KBGT's automatic stop.

Tutorials & Training

Brewing with the KBT

Brewing is simple: add water, add coffee to the filter basket, and flip the switch. The thermoblock sends water through the heating element and into the shower head over your grounds. Brewing completes in 4–6 minutes for a full carafe.

Manual Drip-Stop Basket

The manual drip-stop allows you to control flow speed or stop it entirely by rotating the basket valve. Slowing the flow increases contact time between water and grounds for a fuller extraction. Stopping flow entirely allows you to pour a cup at any time. Rotate back to open to resume brewing.

Coffee Quality Tips

Use freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee for best results — the Moccamaster's precise temperature control is wasted on stale beans. A medium grind is optimal (similar to sea salt texture). Avoid over-filling the basket — too much coffee can slow flow and cause overflow. The Moccamaster's thermoblock maintains 196–205°F throughout the brew, which is within the SCA Gold Cup standard for optimal extraction.

Cleaning & Maintenance

After Each Use

Discard the used filter and grounds. Rinse the brew basket under warm water. Wipe the exterior and brewing area with a damp cloth. Rinse the carafe with warm water.

Thermal Carafe

Hand-wash the thermal carafe with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. The carafe is dishwasher safe but hand-washing maintains the vacuum seal and prolongs the travel lid's sealing ability. For coffee staining inside the carafe, soak with a mixture of warm water and baking soda or use a carafe cleaning tablet.

The thermal carafe keeps coffee hot for approximately 1 hour without a heat source. The Brew-Thru Lid allows direct brewing into the closed carafe — always use the Brew-Thru Lid during brewing. Use the Travel Lid for transport to maintain temperature longer.

Monthly — Descaling

Descale every 2–3 months depending on water hardness. Use a Moccamaster-approved descaler or citric acid solution (1 tsp per cup of water). Fill the reservoir with the descaling solution and run a full brew cycle without coffee. Follow with 2–3 full cycles of clean water to flush completely.

Water Reservoir

Wipe the inside of the water reservoir periodically with a damp cloth. If mineral deposits form, use the descaling solution described above.

Troubleshooting

Brewing Slowly or Incomplete Brew

Scale buildup in the thermoblock is the most common cause. Run a full descaling cycle. Also check that the filter is properly seated and not collapsed against the basket drain hole.

Coffee Tastes Weak

Increase your coffee dose (more coffee per cup of water). Grind finer. Ensure you are using a medium grind — too-coarse a grind produces weak, under-extracted coffee even at correct temperature.

Coffee Tastes Over-Extracted / Bitter

Reduce dose or grind coarser. For the KBGV Select, ensure the volume selector matches your actual brew size.

Carafe Dripping / Leaking

For glass carafes: inspect the lid seal and basket auto-stop (if equipped). For thermal carafes: ensure the Brew-Thru Lid is fully seated during brewing. A cracked carafe lid should be replaced.

Machine Stopped Mid-Brew

The thermal cutoff may have triggered if the machine overheated — allow 10 minutes to cool and restart. If this happens repeatedly, descale the machine.
