Technivorm Moccamaster KM5 Coffee Grinder

Technivorm Moccamaster KM5 Coffee Grinder

Elevate your home coffee grinding experience with the Technivorm Moccamaster KM5 Coffee Grinder. Built to pair perfectly with Moccamaster's famous line of drip brewers, the KM5 features quick, clean grinding and a grind range designed just for drip coffee and pour over specialties. Inside, a 50mm flat steel burr and 300 watt motor designed for slow brew methods make short work of beans. The KM5 doses directly into a glass catch bin using a manual press-and-hold grind switch. Each KM5 is built by hand in the Netherlands, and features a 5-year warranty.

What's In The Box
Technivorm Moccamaster KM5 burr grinder, Borosilicate glass grounds container with grind-thru lid and storage lid, Power cord.

Setup & First Use

Place the KM5 on a level surface. The hopper holds up to 8.8oz (250g) of whole beans — fill via the top-loading hopper opening. The borosilicate glass grounds container sits below the dispensing spout and holds up to 100g of ground coffee.

Before adjusting the grind size, always activate the power switch first — this clears any partially-ground beans from the burrs and prevents the motor from jamming when you turn the stepless dial. Adjust one small step at a time while running. Start at the KM5's dedicated 'Moccamaster range' — grind settings 4–6 on the dial — when pairing with any Moccamaster brewer.

The KM5 uses a press-and-hold grind switch — hold the switch to grind, release to stop. Grind into the glass container, then transfer grounds to your brew basket. The glass container reduces static buildup compared to plastic for a cleaner transfer.

Tutorials & Training

The Moccamaster Range

For use with any Moccamaster brewer, the ideal starting point is grind settings 4–6 on the KM5's stepless dial. Setting 4 is slightly finer (for shorter brew times or those who prefer a stronger cup), setting 6 is slightly coarser (for longer contact times or milder preferences). Start at 5 and adjust based on taste.

Stepless Grind Adjustment

The KM5's stepless dial provides continuous adjustment between settings — there are no clicks or fixed positions. This allows very precise grind size control. Always activate the grinder before adjusting the dial to prevent jamming. Adjust in small increments — the 50mm flat burrs are sensitive to fine changes.

Dosing for Moccamaster Brewers

Standard ratio: 6g of coffee per 5oz of water. For a full KBGV/KB/KBGT/KBT carafe (40oz), use approximately 50–55g of ground coffee. For a KBTS carafe (32oz), use approximately 40–45g. For a CDT Grand (60oz), use approximately 70–75g. Use the glass container's volume markings as a reference guide — they are approximate, not calibrated measurements.

Dose and Store

The glass container's storage lid allows you to grind your full dose, seal the container, and store briefly while you prepare the brewer. For best flavor, grind immediately before brewing — even a few minutes of exposure to air begins to degrade the volatile aromatics in freshly ground coffee.

Cleaning & Maintenance

After Each Use

Brush loose grounds from the grind outlet and dispensing spout with a dry brush. Empty and rinse the glass container. Wipe the exterior with a dry cloth.

Weekly — Burr Cleaning

Remove the top burr by loosening the retaining nut (refer to the instruction manual). Brush both burr surfaces with a dry cleaning brush to remove coffee oil buildup. Do not use water on the burrs or grinding chamber. Reinstall the top burr and grind a small amount of beans before brewing to clear any residue.

Grinder Cleaning Tablets

Use grinder cleaning tablets (Grindz or equivalent) monthly to dissolve coffee oil buildup from the burrs. Run at a medium setting (approximately 5), then grind 20–30g of beans before brewing.

Hopper

Remove and wash the hopper with warm soapy water monthly. Dry thoroughly before reinstalling.

Troubleshooting

Motor Jamming

This occurs when the grind setting is adjusted while the motor is off and beans are trapped between the burrs. Always activate the grinder before adjusting the dial. If jammed, remove beans from the hopper, activate the grinder, and slowly turn the dial to coarser — the burrs should clear. Do not force the dial.

Inconsistent Grind

Ensure beans are dry and fresh — oily or stale beans can cause inconsistent grinding. Clean the burrs regularly. Ensure the top burr is fully seated and locked.

Grounds Not Dispensing

Check the dispensing spout for blockage by compacted grounds. Use a brush to clear the spout channel. Grind at a slightly coarser setting.
