Baratza Sette 270Wi Espresso Grinder

Baratza Sette 270Wi Espresso Grinder

Bringing the best of Baratza's technical prowess to light, the Sette 270Wi combines high-quality steel Etzinger burrs, a redesigned motor mount and Acaia scale-equipped weighted dosing to create a grinder that is easy to dial-in, easier to clean, and easiest to keep full thanks to its bean-saving setup. Baratza's drop-through burrset lines up hopper and burrs right above your portafilter, eliminating excess buildup of grinds while also improving on grind speed over similar chute-based grinder designs. Improvements abound, as the 270Wi also improves on the accuracy and usability of the scale functionality—and opens it to further software updates over bluetooth.

What's In The Box
Baratza Sette 270Wi grinder, Bean hopper with lid, Grounds bin with removable grounds tray, Adjustable portafilter hook, Convertible device arms, Power cord

Setup & First Use

Before using the Sette 270Wi for the first time, remove all packaging and hand-wash the bean hopper, hopper lid, and grounds bin (or dosing cup if included) in warm soapy water. Rinse and let air dry completely. Do not wash burrs with water — this will cause rust. Do not put any plastic parts in the dishwasher.

Do not wash the grind adjustment assembly or burrs with water.

Season new burrs before your first real grind: run 30–50g of whole beans through and discard the output. New burrs have micro-burrs on the cutting edges that affect consistency until broken in. After seasoning, the grinder is ready to dial in.

Place the grinder on a stable, flat surface near a standard household outlet. Baratza grinders are designed for home use and operate on standard 120V AC power. Grind a dose at a time — these grinders are not designed for continuous extended runs.

The Sette 270Wi is built on the Sette 270 platform with one key addition: an integrated Acaia-technology scale built into the portafilter hook assembly. This allows the grinder to dose by weight directly into the portafilter, stopping automatically when the target dose is reached. Three weight presets can be saved for different dose sizes.

Before using weight-based dosing, calibrate the scale using the single-point calibration procedure: hold Preset 1 while plugging in the grinder, place a 500g calibration weight on the grounds tray, and follow the display prompts. The calibration ensures accuracy to within 2–3 beans. Recalibrate if the grinder is moved to a different surface or if dose accuracy drifts.

The 270Wi shares all adjustment mechanics with the Sette 270: 270 settings via macro lever + micro ring, direct-to-portafilter grinding, belt-drive mechanism, and low retention design.

Tutorials & Training

Grind-by-Weight Dosing

Set one of the three weight presets by pressing the preset button and entering your target dose weight. Lock your portafilter into the hook, press start, and the grinder doses directly to your target and stops automatically. Accuracy is within a few tenths of a gram using Acaia scale technology. If doses drift over time, recalibrate: hold Preset 1 while plugging in power, place a 500g calibration weight on the grounds tray, and follow the display prompts.

Three Weight Presets

Store three different dose weights for quick selection between different doses — for example, a 9g single, 18g double, and 21g large dose. Switch between them with a single button press, eliminating the need for a separate scale in the daily espresso workflow.

Bluetooth

The 270Wi includes Bluetooth connectivity for firmware updates via the Baratza app. Connect when prompted to receive improvements to scale calibration and dosing accuracy. Bluetooth is used for updates only and is not required for normal grinding operation.

Macro and Micro Adjustment

Same adjustment system as the Sette 270: macro collar numbered 1 (finest) to 31 (coarsest) for large range changes, and a stepless micro ring labeled A (finest) to I (coarsest) for fine-tuning. For espresso, start at macro 3–9 with micro at E, then use the micro ring in small increments to adjust shot time. Always adjust with the motor running.

Low Retention and Single-Dosing

The 270Wi's weight-based dosing pairs naturally with single-dosing. Weigh beans before loading, set your weight preset, and the grinder stops cleanly when the target is reached. Typical retention is under 0.5g. Purge 1–2g when changing beans or after a large grind adjustment.

Timer Mode

The 270Wi also supports time-based dosing with 0.01-second timer precision if preferred over weight-based dosing. Three programmable time presets are available alongside the three weight presets.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily — Grounds Tray

Remove and empty the removable silicone grounds tray from the grounds bin after each session. Rinse with warm water and dry before reinstalling.

Scale Platform

Keep the scale platform and grounds tray area clean and free of loose grounds — debris on the weighing surface affects dose accuracy. Brush clean after each session. Do not use wet cloths on the scale electronics.

Weekly — Hopper and Bin

Hand-wash the hopper, hopper lid, and grounds bin in warm soapy water. Brush the burrs and adjustment assembly dry — do not wash with water.

Monthly — Grounds Bin and Hopper

Wash the grounds bin, hopper, and hopper lid with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before reinstalling. If grounds have built up on the chute walls inside the grinder, use a brush to clear them.

Quarterly — Grinder Cleaning Tablets

Run a full cycle of grinder cleaning tablets (Grindz or equivalent) through the grinder at a medium setting. This removes coffee oil buildup from burr surfaces and the grinding chamber. After the tablet cycle, run 30g of actual coffee beans through to purge any tablet residue. Do not use rice — it can damage the burrs and internal components.

Clogs

If the grinder runs but no grounds fall into the bin, the chute may be clogged with compacted coffee powder. This most often happens from over-filling the grounds bin, grinding oily or dark-roasted beans without regular cleaning, or grinding flavored coffee. Visit baratza.com/troubleshooting for step-by-step unclogging instructions specific to your model.

Troubleshooting

Grinder Won't Start

Confirm the hopper is fully seated and locked — the grinder has a safety interlock that prevents starting without the hopper installed. Ensure the power cord is plugged in and the outlet is live. If the motor ran for a long time, a thermal overload may have triggered; unplug, wait 15 minutes, and try again.

Grind Too Coarse / Weak Coffee

Move to a lower (finer) setting. Adjust while the grinder is running or completely empty. Changes of 2–3 settings at a time are enough for drip methods; 1-setting increments for espresso.

Scale Not Dosing Accurately

Recalibrate using the single-point calibration procedure (hold Preset 1 while plugging in, place a 500g weight, follow prompts). Ensure the grinder is on a stable, level surface during calibration and use. Vibration from nearby appliances can affect scale readings. If accuracy is consistently off after calibration, check for firmware updates via Bluetooth.

Gearbox Noise

Same as the Sette 270 — clicking or grinding from the gear area over time indicates gearbox wear. Replacement gearboxes are user-installable and available at baratza.com.

Grind Too Fine / Slow Espresso or Clogged Filter

Move to a higher (coarser) setting. For espresso, adjust 1 click at a time. If the portafilter is completely blocked with no flow, jump 3–4 settings coarser and work back in.

Inconsistent Grind / Fines Surge

Clean the burrs with a brush — oil and grounds buildup is the most common cause of inconsistency. If the grinder is new, the burrs may simply need more seasoning. Run another 50g through and retest.

Grinding Noise / Rattling

Check that the hopper is fully seated and locked. Confirm the ring burr is properly installed with the red alignment tab in the correct position. A bean fragment or foreign object occasionally gets lodged between the burrs — if the noise is sudden and severe, stop the grinder immediately, remove the hopper and ring burr, and inspect.
