An excellent and delightfully fresh cup of single-serve coffee starts with the Hario Coffee Dripper V60. Crafted in sleek white ceramic, Hario intended this pour over for brewing one cup of coffee or, depending on the size you select, several cups at a time to share with friends.

How the Hario Coffee Dripper V60 Works

The pour-over technique allows you to brew directly into your cup or server. While techniques may vary among users, below is an overview of the pour-over's general process.

  1. Grind your coffee beans and preheat your dripper and vessel
  2. Set the dripper atop or above your vessel
  3. Place the appropriate paper or cloth filter into the Hario Coffee Dripper V60
  4. Add ground coffee depending on your specific taste preferences
  5. Pour the desired amount of preheated (anywhere from 195&deg to 205&deg) water over the coffee grounds, allowing the brewed coffee to drip down into your vessel

Setup & First Use

Before first use, rinse the ceramic V60 under warm water. The ceramic dripper requires no assembly. It sits on top of a cup, mug, or server — no stand is included.

Ceramic V60 drippers are available in size 01 (1–2 cups) and 02 (1–4 cups). Match your filter to your dripper: VCF-01 for size 01, VCF-02 for size 02.

The ceramic V60 has the same 60-degree cone, single large hole, and spiral rib interior as the plastic version. The key advantage of ceramic over plastic is heat retention — ceramic stays hot during brewing, producing more consistent extraction temperature from start to finish. This makes the ceramic V60 slightly more forgiving of small pour technique variations than plastic.

Hario makes the V60 ceramic in Japan from high-quality porcelain-style ceramic. It is heavier than plastic and should be handled carefully to avoid chipping or breakage.

Tutorials & Training

V60 Brewing Method

Grind: Medium-fine — slightly coarser than espresso, finer than drip. Approximately the texture of fine sea salt. The V60's single large hole drains quickly, so a medium-fine grind is needed to slow flow enough for adequate extraction.

Ratio: 1:15–1:17 (coffee to water by weight). For 15g of coffee, use 225–255ml of water. Yield: approximately 200–220ml.

Step 1: Fold the filter along its seam and place in the dripper. Pre-rinse with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the dripper and vessel. Discard rinse water.

Step 2: Add your medium-fine ground coffee. Gently tap the dripper to level the bed.

Step 3: Bloom. Start timer. Pour 2–3x the coffee weight in water (30–45g for 15g coffee) in a slow spiral from the center outward. Wait 30–45 seconds for the bloom to complete.

Step 4: Continue pouring in slow, controlled spirals, maintaining a steady water level in the dripper — typically 2–3cm above the coffee bed. Add water in 2–3 pours, spacing them 20–30 seconds apart. Total brew time target: 2:30–3:30 minutes.

Step 5: Lift and discard the filter. The flat bed of spent grounds (no mound in the center) indicates even extraction.

Plastic vs. Ceramic V60

Plastic retains less heat than ceramic and loses temperature faster during brewing. Pre-rinse and pre-heat thoroughly, and pour slightly hotter water (205°F / 96°C) to compensate for the heat loss into the plastic. The brewing result is otherwise identical when technique is consistent. Plastic is lighter and more durable — ideal for travel.

Pour Technique

Pour height: 3–5cm above the coffee bed for better saturation coverage. Circular motion: start in the center and spiral outward, then back in. Avoid pouring directly onto the filter paper walls — pour onto the coffee bed only. A gooseneck kettle provides the best control for V60 brewing.

Cleaning & Maintenance

After Each Use

Remove and discard the filter. Rinse the ceramic dripper under hot water. Hand-wash with mild dish soap. The ceramic V60 is dishwasher safe — top rack. Handle carefully when loading/unloading to avoid chipping.

Temperature Shock

Avoid sudden temperature changes — do not place a cold ceramic dripper directly into boiling water or pour boiling water into a very cold dripper. Always pre-rinse with hot water first to bring the ceramic up to temperature gradually.

Troubleshooting

Brew Too Fast / Weak Coffee

Grind finer. Slow your pour rate. Ensure you're using V60 paper filters — using a filter not designed for the V60 changes the flow rate significantly.

Brew Too Slow / Bitter Coffee

Grind coarser. Speed up your pour slightly.

Uneven Extraction / One-Sided Grounds

Pour more evenly in circles across the full coffee bed. Ensure the filter is properly seated and not collapsing into the drainage hole.
