DeLonghi La Specialista Opera EC9555M Espresso Machine

Get your home espresso settled in one sleek package with the DeLonghi La Specialista Opera Espresso Machine. Designed with a grinder, lever-style tamper, and a bevy of drink programming options, the Opera can recreate most of a coffee shops' menu in its single footprint. Unique to the Opera are its dedicated cold extraction modes for cold coffee and espresso drinks. In under 5 minutes, the Opera will extract a cup of cold brew, alongside other standard drink options like Americanos, Espresso, and coffee. What's In The Box
DeLonghi La Specialista Opera (EC9555M) espresso machine, 58mm stainless steel portafilter, Single-wall filter baskets (1 cup, 2 cup, & pre-ground), Dual-wall filter baskets (1 cup & 2 cup), Water filter holder with DeLonghi DLSC002 water filter, Tamper, Milk jug, Power cord.

Setup & First Use

Before first use, remove all packaging. Install the DLSC002 water filter: soak for 1 minute, rinse, and seat in the water tank. Fill with cold, fresh water. Wash the portafilter, baskets, and milk jug with warm water and mild soap.

The La Specialista Opera is a prosumer-level semi-automatic machine with a dual boiler/heater system — a dedicated brew thermoblock and a dedicated steam boiler — allowing simultaneous extraction and milk texturing. Active Temperature Control offers 5 brew temperature levels for precise roast-matching. A flow control knob on the front allows adjustment of pre-infusion flow and total extraction pressure profile.

The Smart Tamping Station grinds and tamps automatically. Set the grind level on the grinder dial. Insert the 58mm portafilter into the grinding cradle and press the dose button — the machine grinds the correct amount and tamps at consistent pressure.

Plug in and power on. Allow a full warm-up cycle before first use. Run a blank flush through the group head before brewing coffee.

Tutorials & Training

Smart Tamping Station — Consistent Puck Prep

Insert the 58mm portafilter into the cradle. Press the dose button. The sensor grinding system weighs the dose for consistency. The integrated tamp station applies consistent tamping pressure automatically. After dosing and tamping, lock the portafilter into the group head immediately.

Active Temperature Control — 5 Levels

The temperature dial offers 5 settings from 1 (coolest) to 5 (hottest). Use level 2–3 for light roasts (higher acidity, more soluble compounds, benefit from slightly lower temp); level 3 for medium; level 4–5 for dark roasts (need higher temperature for full extraction). Adjust and allow a heat stabilization cycle before the next shot.

Flow Control

The flow control knob adjusts the water flow rate during pre-infusion and extraction. Lower flow creates a longer pre-infusion phase and more even puck saturation; higher flow shortens the process. Experiment with flow control to refine extraction on specific beans — it is a precision tool best explored after you have a baseline espresso dialed in.

Dual Boiler — Simultaneous Use

The Opera's dedicated steam boiler allows you to texture milk at the same time the espresso is extracting, or immediately after without waiting for the machine to switch modes. Pull your shot; while the last drops are extracting, begin steaming milk. This significantly speeds up the workflow for milk-based drinks.

Cold Coffee / Cold Brew Mode

Select the cold coffee mode for a lower-temperature extraction that reduces acidic flavor compounds. Brew over ice for a smooth, mellow iced coffee with a full flavor profile — the cold mode is engineered specifically for this, unlike simply pulling a hot shot over ice.

Manual Steam Wand

The Opera has a commercial-style manual steam wand. Purge before and after use. Stretch milk near the surface for foam, then swirl to heat. Target 140–150°F. Close the dial immediately when done and wipe the wand.

Cleaning & Maintenance

After Each Shot

Rinse the portafilter and knock out the puck. Wipe the group head. Purge and wipe the steam wand immediately. The Opera has an auto-rinse cycle at startup — allow it to complete before brewing.

Weekly — Cleaning Cycle

Run the cleaning cycle when prompted using a DeLonghi cleaning tablet and the included cleaning disc in the portafilter. Follow the display prompts.

Grinding Chamber and Burrs

Periodically run grinder cleaning tablets (DeLonghi or Grindz) through the grinder to clear coffee oil buildup. Follow with a small amount of beans to purge residue before brewing.

Water Filter and Descaling

Replace the DLSC002 filter every 2–3 months. Descale when prompted using DeLonghi EcoDecalk. Follow the on-machine procedure completely.

Troubleshooting

No Coffee Flow

Grind too fine or portafilter not locked. Adjust grind coarser by one step. Verify the portafilter is fully turned and locked.

Inconsistent Shot Times

Grinder may need calibration or cleaning. Run grinder cleaning tablets. Check that the bean hopper is adequately filled — low hopper levels affect dosing consistency.

Steam Pressure Low

Allow full heat-up of the steam boiler. If pressure has declined over time, descaling is likely needed.

Flow Control — No Effect

The flow control knob has most visible effect during pre-infusion. Ensure it is positioned correctly and adjust one increment at a time between shots.
