What's In The Box
DeLonghi Linea Classic (EM450M) espresso machine, Portafilter with single-shot and double-shot pressurized filter baskets, Coffee scoop/tamper combo, Power cord. Note: Cappuccino System adjustable frothing wand and pressure gauge are integrated into the machine.

Setup & First Use

Before first use, remove all packaging and wash the portafilter and filter baskets with warm water. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. Fill the 1.1L removable water tank with fresh, cold water and seat it firmly in the machine.

The Linea Classic uses a thermoblock heating system that reaches brewing temperature in under a minute. The pressure gauge on the front panel shows brew pressure in real time — aim for the marked zone during extraction. The adjustable Cappuccino System frothing wand can be set to produce either steamed milk or dense foam.

Plug in and switch the machine on. Run a blank cycle (no coffee) with a container under the portafilter to flush and prime the system before first use.

Basket selection: the Linea Classic includes pressurized (dual-wall) single-shot and double-shot filter baskets. These work well with pre-ground coffee and do not require precise grind calibration, making them ideal for getting started quickly. Insert the chosen basket into the portafilter and lock it into the group head.

Tutorials & Training

Pulling an Espresso Shot

Fill the appropriate basket with finely ground coffee. Do not use too-coarse a grind — the pressurized baskets work best with a medium-fine espresso grind. Tamp lightly and evenly using the included scoop/tamper. Lock the portafilter into the group head with a firm clockwise turn. Press the single-shot or double-shot button. The machine doses a preset volume and stops automatically.

Programmable Shot Volumes

Shot volumes are programmable. To set: with the machine ready, press and hold the single or double shot button. The machine begins extracting. Release the button when your desired volume is in the cup — the machine saves this volume and will stop there automatically on future shots. You can press the button again to override and stop early at any time.

Cappuccino System — Frothing Milk

The Cappuccino System wand adjusts between a steam/hot-water mode and a froth mode using the wand dial. Fill a frothing pitcher with cold milk to just below the spout. Purge the wand for 2–3 seconds before inserting into the milk. For foam, set the dial toward the froth position and submerge the tip near the milk surface. For steamed milk (latte), set toward the steam position and submerge the tip slightly deeper. Heat to 140–150°F, then close the dial and wipe the wand immediately.

Adjustable Drip Tray

The removable drip tray insert can be lifted out to create clearance for taller mugs — up to 13cm. Remove the insert before placing a tall mug under the portafilter spouts.

Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge shows extraction pressure during the shot. The ideal range is marked on the gauge — consistent pressure in that zone indicates correct dosing, tamping, and grind. Too low (under-extraction): increase grind fineness or dose. Too high (over-extraction): coarsen grind or reduce dose.

Cleaning & Maintenance

After Each Use

Knock the spent puck out of the portafilter basket. Rinse the portafilter and basket under hot water. Wipe the group head and steam wand with a damp cloth. Purge the steam wand for 2–3 seconds then wipe immediately. Empty and rinse the drip tray.

Weekly

Run a blank shot (no coffee) through the group head to flush coffee oils. Clean the Cappuccino System wand tip with the small cleaning pin if holes become blocked. Soak the portafilter basket in warm soapy water and rinse.

Descaling

Descale when machine performance decreases or when prompted. Use a DeLonghi EcoDecalk or citric acid-based descaler. Follow the descaling procedure in the instruction book. Do not use vinegar. Run 3 rinse cycles with fresh water after descaling.

Troubleshooting

No Coffee Flow

Check that the portafilter is fully locked into the group head. Grind may be too fine even for a pressurized basket — adjust coarser. Ensure the water tank is filled and properly seated.

Coffee Running Too Slowly

Even with pressurized baskets, an excessively fine grind will restrict flow. Move to a slightly coarser grind or reduce tamp pressure.

Coffee Too Weak / Running Too Fast

Grind is too coarse. Move finer. Increase tamp pressure slightly. Check that the basket is correctly seated in the portafilter.

Pressure Gauge in Wrong Zone

Under-zone: grind finer or increase dose. Over-zone: grind coarser or reduce dose. With pressurized baskets, the range of acceptable grind is wide — small adjustments should bring pressure into the marked zone.

Steam Wand Not Producing Steam

Allow the machine to fully switch to steam mode — the thermoblock takes a few seconds to transition. If the wand tip is blocked, use the cleaning pin to clear the holes.
