LELIT Mara X Espresso Machine

LELIT Mara X Espresso Machine

Make the most of your Kitchen counter space with the LELIT Mara X Espresso Machine. A compact, uber-consistent heat exchanger that prioritizes espresso quality over everything else, the Mara X eschews traditional espresso machine wisdom to make some of the best espresso in its segment. Unlike traditional heat-exchange machines that set steam pressure directly at the boiler, the Mara X uses a second sensor at the group to target brew temperatures first. A physical toggle behind the drip tray lets you set from 3 temperatures (197, 201, or 205 degrees); while a switch on the side of the machine offers two selectable brew modes. For espresso, select 'Xmode Coffee' to get the best temp consistency for coffee-only drinks. Switch to 'Xmode steam' to increase steam pressure after brewing for better milk frothing. More than just a technical marvel, the Mara X features a bevy of barista-saving benefits too: silent pump design, long-ramp preinfusion, a dual pump and steam pressure gauge, optional standby mode, an ergonomic portafilter, and a custom-fit precision tamper right out of the box. Between its high-tech temp management and user-centric design, the Mara X makes an excellent coffee companion for any enthusiast.

Setup & First Use

Place the Mara X on a level surface — at only 9 inches wide, it is one of the most compact E61 heat exchanger machines available. Fill the water tank with cold filtered water. Install the water softener filter. Allow 20–25 minutes warmup for the HX system to reach thermal equilibrium.

The Mara X is a heat exchanger (HX) machine with an E61 group head. Unlike single-boiler machines that switch between brew and steam modes, the HX Mara X can theoretically produce steam and espresso simultaneously using one boiler — the heat exchanger pipe inside the boiler heats brew water as it passes through, while the surrounding boiler water powers the steam wand.

Temperature management is unique to the Mara X: instead of relying only on boiler pressure (as traditional HX machines do), the Mara X has a second temperature sensor at the group head itself. This dual-probe system — patent-pending when released — allows the machine to actively target brew temperature at the group rather than inferring it from boiler pressure.

Three brew temperature settings are available via the dedicated 3-way switch on the front: low (197°F / 92°C), medium (201°F / 94°C), high (205°F / 96°C). Select your temperature based on bean roast level. On the LCC, access additional settings for preinfusion and the Brew X / Steam X operational modes.

Tutorials & Training

Brew X vs. Steam X Mode

Brew X mode: the machine prioritizes stable brew temperature. After a steam session, the machine actively cools the group to return to brew temperature before allowing another shot. This is the recommended mode for mostly-espresso use with occasional milk.

Steam X mode: the machine behaves more like a traditional HX machine, allowing continuous milk steaming without the wait. Brew temperature may be slightly less stable but milk output is more immediate. Choose this mode if you prepare multiple milk drinks in sequence.

Flush Procedure for HX Machines

If the Mara X has been sitting idle for more than 10–15 minutes, the water in the heat exchanger has over-heated. Before pulling a shot, run a short 3–5 second flush through the group (with portafilter out) to purge the overheated water and replace it with correctly-tempered brew water from the HX. Skip the flush for the first shot of the day (cold water) — flush after the machine is fully warmed.

Three Temperature Settings

The front 3-way switch selects 197°F, 201°F, or 205°F at the group. Use 201°F (94°C) as a starting point for medium roasts. Lighter roasts benefit from 205°F; very dark roasts from 197°F. Temperature changes require a few minutes to stabilize.

E61 Group Pre-Infusion

The E61 group provides mechanical pre-infusion: as the cam lever is engaged, there is a brief period at low pressure before full pump pressure engages. This provides natural pre-infusion without LCC programming. The LCC adds an additional electronically-controlled pre-infusion if desired.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily Cleaning

After each session, purge the steam wand briefly and wipe it down. Remove the portafilter, knock out the puck, and rinse the basket under warm water. Wipe the group head area and drip tray.

Weekly Backflushing

Backflush the Mara X's group head using the backflushing (blind) basket and espresso machine cleaner such as Cafiza or Puly Caff. Run 5–6 cycles of 10 seconds on / 10 seconds off. Follow with 5–6 plain water rinse cycles. The 3-way solenoid makes the Mara X easy to backflush cleanly.

Ongoing Maintenance

Use soft, filtered water in the reservoir to minimize mineral buildup. Replace the water softener filter per the recommended schedule in your LELIT user manual. Have a qualified technician inspect internal components annually if you use the machine daily.

Troubleshooting

Shots Inconsistent Between Sessions

Inconsistent shots after idle time are usually a flush issue. Always flush the group for 3–5 seconds before the first shot after idle time (10+ minutes). Refer to the Brew X / Steam X mode description above.

Machine in Brew X Mode Waiting Too Long After Steam

The Brew X mode actively cools the group — wait times depend on how much steaming was done. A brief 3–5 second flush at the group will accelerate the cooldown. If wait times are too long for your workflow, switch to Steam X mode.

Steam Pressure Too High / Too Low

The Mara X's steam boiler pressure is set by the boiler temperature. Normal operating steam pressure is 0.8–1.2 bar at the dual gauge. If out of range, the OPV (over-pressure valve) may need adjustment — this is a service-level task.
