Rocket Espresso Appartamento Nera Espresso Machine

Rocket Espresso Appartamento Nera Espresso Machine

A stylish update to the classic Rocket Espresso Appartamento Espresso Machine, the Nera version adds a stunning and modern black powder coat to this beloved espresso machine. On the inside, this is still the same hand-built Italian espresso machine, providing great performance, hands-on workflow, and excellent temperature stability. The Appartamento Nera's heat exchanger boiler lets you brew and froth your milk at the same time. You'll also get that temperature stability thanks to the machine's heated E61 group head. Love the way your espresso machine looks as you brew your favorite beans from home with the Rocket Espresso Appartamento Nera!

What's In The Box
The Rocket Espresso Appartamento Nera includes: espresso machine (black powder coat case), 58mm double-spout portafilter, single and double filter baskets, backflush disc, 58mm tamper, scoop, cup rail, and cleaning brush. The Nera adds sprung valves, an electronic water level sensor, and an insulated steam wand versus the standard Appartamento.

Setup & First Use

Before proceeding, check the box and machine for any signs of damage or tampering. If significant damage is found, stop and contact Seattle Coffee Gear at 866-372-4734 before continuing.

Placement and Installation

Place the machine on a flat, dry, stable surface. The base should be approximately 100–105 cm above the floor. Leave at least 10 cm of clearance on each side and behind the machine for ventilation. Do not install near heat sources, outdoors, or in damp rooms. Operating temperature must be between 5°C and 36°C.

Filling the Water Tank

Lift the water tank chamber cover and fill the tank with clean, filtered water up to the MAX line (approximately 1.9 L). Rocket recommends placing a softener bag in the tank. Water hardness should be between 4–7 °f (French) / 2–4 °d (German). Do not use distilled water. Reposition the cover firmly after filling.

First Start-Up

  1. Make sure the coffee dispensing lever is in the vertical (OFF) position.
  2. Turn the main switch from O to I to power on. Appartamento Nera: the indicator light glows steady green.
  3. Open the steam knob — you'll hear the pump begin filling the boiler.
  4. When the pump stops, close the steam knob. Boiler heating begins.
  5. Wait for the boiler pressure gauge to reach approximately 1 bar.
  6. Open the steam knob for 5 seconds to release any vacuum inside the boiler, then close it again. This step is critical — skipping it can cause milk to be drawn back into the boiler.
  7. Wait for the gauge to return to 1 bar.
  8. Fully raise the coffee dispensing lever and drain one cup of hot water from the group head. This purge step is only required on first use.
  9. Lower the lever to stop flow.

The machine is now ready. Allow 15–18 minutes of warm-up time before pulling your first shot — a fully heated group head and portafilter make a significant difference in espresso quality.

Installing the Portafilter

Insert the portafilter into the group head and rotate the handle left to right until it sits firmly at 90 degrees from the front of the machine. Leave the portafilter locked in the group head whenever the machine is not in use — this keeps it heated and prevents the group head gasket from drying out prematurely.

Pulling Your First Shot

  1. Select the single or double portafilter basket.
  2. Fill with ground coffee, tamp evenly, and remove any grounds from the basket rim.
  3. Lock the portafilter into the group head and place your cup(s) under the spout.
  4. Raise the coffee dispensing lever to start extraction. Lower it to stop.
  5. Maximum extraction time is 100 seconds — the machine stops automatically after this.
  6. Remove, empty, and rinse the portafilter, then re-lock it in the group head.

It is recommended to run one water-only pull through a new portafilter before your first actual shot to clear any manufacturing residues.

Tutorials & Training

Dialing In Your Appartamento Nera

Getting great shots from your Appartamento Nera starts with dialing in your grind and dose. These guides walk you through the process.

Tamping & Technique

Consistent tamping and prep technique are essential for even extraction on a heat exchanger machine like the Appartamento Nera.

Weighing & Consistency

These guides explain why weighing your shots matters and how to build it into your workflow.

Troubleshooting Your Shots

If something's off with your espresso, these guides help you diagnose and fix the most common issues.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Brush the brew head filter daily. Every week, after backflushing, add a small amount of espresso cleaning detergent to the blind basket. Dissolve the detergent in hot water and insert the portafilter into the unit head. Open and close the unit dispensing for about 10 seconds. Repeat several times.Backflushing should be performed weekly under most use cases. For heavier use cases, 6+ drinks a day, use detergent when backflushing more often, around every 20 drinks.

Troubleshooting

Cooling Flush Required After Idle

Like all heat exchanger machines, the Appartamento Nera benefits from a brief cooling flush (2–4 seconds) after the machine has sat idle at temperature, to normalize brew water temperature.

Water Level Sensor Alert

The Nera includes an electronic water sensor. If the low-water alert triggers, fill the reservoir immediately. Do not continue pulling shots with low water — it risks a dry boiler.

Powder Coat Scratches

The Nera's black powder coat is durable but not immune to scratching. Clean with a soft, damp cloth — avoid abrasive scrubbers that can damage the finish.

Steam Wand Not Steaming

Ensure the machine has reached steam temperature. The insulated steam wand retains heat well but takes the same time as any HX machine to pressurize. Confirm the steam knob is in the correct open position.
