Rocket Espresso R Nine One Espresso Machine

Rocket Espresso R Nine One Espresso Machine

Quality: Meet technology with the Rocket Espresso R Nine One. Built with the utmost in home espresso in-mind, the R Nine One builds from the design of Rocket Espresso's commercial brethren with a saturated group, stainless brew and service boilers, and programmable dosing. The R Nine One adds to this formidable foundation with both manual and programmable pressure profiling—giving you 5 profiles for any coffee recipe imaginable. Profiles are set through the R Nine One's color touchscreen, or by hand with the group-mounted control knob. Other class-leading features include power scheduling to preheat your machine before use, PID controller temp management, and a full-stainless case and frame. If you're looking for the next step in Italian espresso machines, the R Nine One is hard to beat. Please note: This item ships via freight and will require a signature upon delivery. Shipping estimates may not be accurate depending on shipment availability and distance from our warehouse. Shipping weight is ~120 pounds when crated for shipping and product weight is 85-90 pounds when boilers are filled with water.

Setup & First Use

Overview

The R Nine One is Rocket's flagship home espresso machine, featuring a saturated group head (rather than E61), dual stainless steel boilers, and a full pressure profiling system. It requires 30–45 minutes to reach full thermal stability.

Saturated Group Head

Unlike the E61 thermosiphon design used on the Giotto and Mozzafiato lines, the R Nine One's saturated group head circulates water directly from the brew boiler through the group at all times — providing superior temperature stability and eliminating the need for cooling flushes.

Touchscreen and PID Setup

The color touchscreen provides access to all machine settings: brew and steam temperatures, pressure profile programming, volumetric dosing, and power scheduling. Navigate the menu to set your brew boiler temperature (typically 93–95°C).

Pressure Profile Programming

The R Nine One supports 5 programmable pressure profiles accessible from the touchscreen. Each profile can define a pre-infusion phase, extraction pressure, and ramp-down. Alternatively, use the group-mounted control knob for real-time manual profiling.

Power Scheduling

Program the auto on/off timer through the touchscreen so the machine is warmed up before your morning routine — a 30-minute preheat window is typically sufficient.

Tutorials & Training

Saturated Group vs. E61

The saturated group's direct boiler connection means the group head is always at brew boiler temperature — no idle drift, no cooling flush required. This translates to more consistent shot-to-shot temperatures compared to HX E61 machines.

Pressure Profiling Strategies

Start with a simple profile: 4-second pre-infusion at 3–4 bar, ramp to 9 bar for the body of the shot, then gentle ramp-down at the end. For lighter roasts, extended pre-infusion (6–8 seconds) and a slightly lower peak pressure (8 bar) often yields cleaner, brighter flavors.

Saving and Recalling Profiles

Name and save each of your 5 profiles on the touchscreen for quick recall. Assign profiles to specific coffees or drink types — for example, one for single-origin filter roast, one for espresso blend, one for ristretto.

Volumetric Dosing

Program shot volume by the milliliter through the touchscreen. This automates shot stopping at a consistent weight — particularly useful when serving multiple drinks quickly.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily Cleaning

Purge and wipe the steam wand. Remove and rinse the portafilter and basket. Wipe the group head and drip tray. Empty the drip tray before it fills completely.

Weekly Backflushing

Use the blind basket and espresso machine cleaner for backflushing the saturated group. Run 5–6 on/off cycles, then 5–6 rinse cycles. The saturated group responds well to regular backflushing.

Water Quality

Stainless steel boilers are more resistant to scale than copper, but regular water quality management is still important. Use soft, filtered water (75–150ppm) and follow the R Nine One user manual's maintenance intervals.

Troubleshooting

Pressure Profile Not Executing Correctly

Verify the profile steps are saved correctly in the touchscreen programming menu. A factory reset can clear saved profiles — export or note your settings before performing any reset.

Group Head Temperature Inconsistency

The saturated group is normally very stable. If temperatures vary, check that the brew boiler PID is set correctly and the boiler is fully up to temperature before pulling shots.

Touchscreen Unresponsive

Clean the screen with a dry, soft cloth. A power cycle (full power off and restart) usually resolves touchscreen freezes. If the issue persists, contact SCG service.

Rotary Pump Noise

The rotary pump is quieter than vibration pumps but not silent. Some operational noise is expected. Loud rattling or grinding sounds are abnormal and warrant technician inspection.
