Setup & First Use

Before First Use

Fill the 2.5-liter internal reservoir. You may alternatively connect the machine directly to your water line via the rotary pump's plumbing port. Run water through both boilers without coffee to flush the system. Allow 30–40 minutes for dual boilers to reach stable operating temperatures.

Dual PID Controllers

The R58 Cinquantotto has two PID controllers — one for the brew boiler and one for the steam boiler. Both are accessible through the PID display. Set the brew boiler to your desired extraction temperature (typically 93–95°C / 199–203°F). The steam boiler operates at a higher pressure and temperature for powerful steaming.

Shot Timer

Shot timers are displayed in two locations on the R58 — a discrete timer near the group head, and on the PID display. Both start automatically when the pump activates.

Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge shows boiler pressure in real time. During extraction, monitor for 8–9 bar. Consistent low or high readings point to grind adjustment needs rather than machine issues.

Tutorials & Training

Dual Boiler Workflow

Unlike HX machines, the R58's dual boilers allow simultaneous brewing and steaming at independent, stable temperatures. No waiting, no cooling flush — pull your shot and steam milk simultaneously for a faster milk-drink workflow.

Brew Temperature Experimentation

The brew PID lets you experiment with temperature in one-degree increments. Lighter, delicate roasts often benefit from 94–96°C; darker blends can be dialed back to 90–93°C. Note your results and adjust iteratively.

Direct Plumbing Option

If your setup allows, plumbing the R58 into your water line via the rotary pump eliminates the need to monitor or refill the reservoir — ideal for high-volume home use or small office environments.

Pre-Infusion via E61 Group

Rocket's modified E61 group provides automatic pre-infusion before full extraction pressure. This passive system gently wets the puck for improved extraction uniformity — no manual configuration needed.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily Cleaning

Purge and wipe the steam wand after each use. Remove the portafilter and rinse the basket under warm water. Wipe the group head area and drip tray.

Weekly Backflushing

Use the blind basket with espresso machine cleaner. Run 5–6 backflush cycles (10 seconds on / 10 seconds off), then 5–6 rinse cycles. Both boilers benefit from regular water quality maintenance.

Water Quality

The R58's copper dual boilers perform best with soft water (75–150ppm). Use the reservoir water filter or a separate filtration system. Hard water will scale both boilers over time — use soft, filtered water consistently and follow the R58 user manual's maintenance schedule.

Troubleshooting

Brew Boiler Temperature Unstable

Verify the PID probe connection is secure. Small variations (±2–3°F) are normal. Wide swings may indicate a probe or heating element issue.

Steam Pressure Insufficient

Check the steam PID setting — the steam boiler should be set to approximately 1.2–1.4 bar. If pressure is correct but steam is weak, scale buildup may be blocking the steam circuit.

Machine Not Plumbing Correctly

Verify all plumbing fittings are compatible and use thread seal tape on all threaded connections. Check the inlet pressure of your water supply — the rotary pump works best at standard household water pressure.

Shot Timer Not Activating

The timer starts when the pump activates. Ensure the brew switch triggers the pump — if the pump runs but the timer doesn't display, check the PID display settings.
