Breville Bambino Espresso Machine

Breville Bambino Espresso Machine

Brew easy with Breville's Bambino Espresso Machine. Built to fit any budget, the Bambino BES450 offers easy espresso in a pint-sized package. The Bambino begins with a minimal 2-button control scheme coupled with Breville's unique Thermojet heating system—promising piping warm shots seconds after start-up. Milk is managed with a classic one-hole steam wand for repeatable milk texturing exactly as you like it. Best of all, the Bambino comes equipped with pressurized and unpressurized brew baskets for no-fuss extractions, letting it work even with preground coffees.

What's In The Box
Breville Bambino (BES450) espresso machine, 54mm aluminum portafilter, Stainless steel milk jug, Tamper, Steam wand tip cleaning tool, Single wall filter baskets (1 cup & 2 cup), Dual wall filter baskets (1 cup & 2 cup), Descaling powder, Power cord

Setup & First Use

Before first use, remove all labels and packaging. Wash the drip tray, drip tray grid, portafilter, and filter baskets with warm water and gentle dish soap, then rinse and dry. Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth.

Fill the 47 fl.oz (1.4L) water tank with cold, potable water and seat it firmly against the back of the machine. Do not use distilled or heavily filtered water — a small amount of mineral content is needed for correct function. Plug in the machine — the 1 Cup button illuminates. Press the 1 Cup button to run the first-use flush cycle, which rinses and primes the ThermoJet heating system. Place a 17 fl.oz container under the portafilter and steam wand to catch the rinse water.

The Bambino uses a ThermoJet heating system that reaches extraction temperature in 3 seconds. After the first-use cycle completes, the machine enters standby after 10 minutes of inactivity. To turn off and enter standby manually, press the 1 Cup and Hot Water buttons simultaneously for 0.5 seconds.

Basket guide: use single wall baskets with freshly ground whole beans (1 Cup = 8–11g, 2 Cup = 16–19g). Use dual wall baskets with pre-ground coffee — dual wall regulates pressure and is more forgiving of grind variation.

Tutorials & Training

Pulling an Espresso Shot

Insert the appropriate single or dual wall filter basket. Grind fresh coffee to a fine-but-not-powdery consistency and fill the basket. Tap the portafilter to distribute the grounds, then tamp firmly with consistent downward pressure (approximately 30–40 lbs). Lock the portafilter into the group head. Press 1 Cup for a single shot or 2 Cup for a double. The machine applies low-pressure pre-infusion at the start of extraction to gently expand the puck before full 9-bar extraction begins.

Volumetric Programming

The Bambino's 1 Cup and 2 Cup buttons can be reprogrammed to your preferred shot volumes. To program: with the machine in ready mode, press and hold the button you want to program until the button flashes. Begin extraction — the machine grinds a custom volume. When your desired volume is in the cup, press the button again to save. The new volume is stored.

Manual Milk Texturing

The Bambino has a manual steam wand. Purge the wand for 2–3 seconds before steaming. Fill the stainless steel jug with cold milk to just below the spout (do not overfill). Submerge the steam tip just below the milk surface and open the steam dial. Keep the tip near the surface for the first few seconds to stretch and incorporate air — you should hear a gentle hissing sound. Then angle the jug and submerge the tip slightly deeper to create a swirling vortex and heat the milk to 140–150°F (60–65°C). Close the steam dial. Wipe the wand immediately and purge to clear residual milk.

Hot Water Function

Press the Hot Water button to dispense hot water from the steam wand for Americanos or to pre-heat cups. Water flows from the steam wand — place a cup underneath before pressing.

Single vs. Dual Wall Baskets

Single wall baskets require correctly ground, dosed, and tamped coffee to extract properly — they give you full control and feedback on your technique. Dual wall baskets add a second pressurized layer that creates back-pressure regardless of grind accuracy, making them more forgiving. Use single wall baskets with fresh whole beans and a quality grinder; use dual wall baskets with pre-ground coffee.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily — After Each Session

After each brewing session, remove and knock out the spent puck, rinse the portafilter and basket under hot water, and wipe the group head gasket and shower screen with a damp cloth. Purge the steam wand for 2–3 seconds then wipe immediately with a damp cloth. Empty and rinse the drip tray.

Monthly — Water Filter

Replace the water filter in the tank every 3 months or after 40 liters (approximately 10.6 US gallons) of use. Soak the new filter in cold water for 5 minutes, rinse the holder, insert the filter, and reinstall in the tank. Keeping the filter fresh reduces descaling frequency and improves taste.

Descaling

Descale when the CLEAN/DESCALE light illuminates on the Bambino or when you notice reduced steam power, slower heating, or temperature instability. Use Breville's descaling powder or a Breville-recommended descaling solution. Follow the descaling procedure in the instruction book. Do not use vinegar — it can damage internal components. After descaling, run at least 3 full rinse cycles with fresh water before brewing.

Steam Wand

If the steam wand tip becomes blocked, use the included steam wand cleaning tool (pin) to clear the holes. For milk residue buildup, soak the tip in warm water and use a damp cloth to wipe clean. Never allow milk to dry on the steam wand — wipe immediately after every use.

Portafilter and Baskets

Wash the portafilter and filter baskets by hand with warm soapy water. Do not put the portafilter, tamper, or any espresso accessories in the dishwasher.

Troubleshooting

No Coffee Flow / Very Slow Flow

Grind is too fine, dose is too high, or tamp is too firm. Adjust grind 1–2 settings coarser, reduce dose by 1–2g, or reduce tamping pressure. If using single wall baskets, the grind and dose must be dialed in precisely — switch to dual wall baskets for more forgiving extraction while dialing in.

Coffee Running Too Fast / Weak Flavor

Grind is too coarse, dose is too low, or tamp is too light. Adjust grind 1–2 settings finer and ensure the dose fills the basket correctly. Use the Razor trimming tool (if included) to verify dose level is correct before tamping.

Espresso Too Bitter

Over-extraction — grind coarser, reduce dose, or lower brew temperature. Check that the machine has fully heated before pulling a shot; pulling on a cold machine extracts unevenly. Also verify the group head and portafilter are clean — residual oils cause bitterness.

Espresso Not Hot Enough

Preheat your cups — place them on the cup warming tray or fill with hot water and discard before brewing. Ensure the machine has fully heated before extracting. Run a blank shot (no coffee) through the group head to bring it to temperature if it has been idle.

No Steam / Weak Steam

Allow the machine to fully heat to steam-ready temperature before attempting to steam. Check that the steam wand tip holes are not blocked — use the cleaning pin to clear them. If steam pressure has decreased over time, descaling is likely needed.

CLEAN / DESCALE Light On

Run the prompted cleaning or descaling cycle immediately. Do not continue brewing through a maintenance alert — the Bambino requires cleaning to maintain performance and component longevity. Follow the on-machine prompts or refer to the Care & Cleaning section of the instruction book.

Machine Won't Start

Ensure the water tank is filled above the minimum line and properly seated. Confirm the portafilter is fully locked into the group head — the machine will not start if the portafilter is not secured. Check that the power cord is fully connected.
