Breville Smart Grinder Pro Coffee Grinder

Breville Smart Grinder Pro Coffee Grinder

Just when we thought these burr grinders couldn't get any sharper, Breville introduces the Smart Grinder Pro! While this grinder can't exactly solve differential equations (but who can?!), it can determine the process for grinding through equal levels of coffee across separate grind cycles. Featuring Breville's innovative dosing technology, aptly named the Dosing IQ, this smarty-pants is designed to offer precise adjustment of your grind time in 0.2-second increments, along with easy saving functionality for quick storage of your preferred settings. All this in combination with the Breville Smart Grinder Pro's 60 grind settings will make you wonder how you ever drank coffee without it!

What's In The Box
Breville Smart Grinder Pro (BCG820) coffee grinder, Bean hopper with lid (1 lb / 450g capacity), Portafilter cradle 50–54mm, Portafilter cradle 58mm, Grinds container with lid and cap, Conical burr cleaning brush, Power cord

Setup & First Use

Before first use, wash the hopper, hopper lid, portafilter cradles, grinds container, container lid and cap, and cleaning brush with warm soapy water. Dry thoroughly. Place on a flat, level surface and plug into 120V.

Align the tabs on the base of the bean hopper and insert into position. Turn the hopper dial 90° clockwise to lock — the LCD will display 'PLEASE LOCK HOPPER' if not properly locked, disabling operation. Fill with fresh whole beans and secure the lid.

The Smart Grinder Pro has 60 grind settings on the Grind Size Dial (separate from the hopper — located on the grinder body). Settings 1–30 are the espresso range; 31–48 are drip/filter; 49–54 are percolator; 55–60 are French press. The SHOTS/CUPS button selects 1–5 shots or 1–12 cups. The GRIND AMOUNT dial adjusts the timed dose for the selected amount. The LCD displays grind setting, grind size, shots/cups count, and current grind time. Season new burrs with 30–50g of discarded grounds before dialing in.

Tutorials & Training

Grinding for Espresso

Insert the 50–54mm or 58mm portafilter cradle under the grind outlet. Insert your portafilter. Press the SHOTS/CUPS button to select 1 or 2 shots. Set the Grind Size Dial to approximately setting 12 for espresso as a starting point. Press START or push the portafilter into the portafilter activation switch to begin grinding. The grinder stops automatically when the preset time elapses.

Portafilter Activation Switch

The portafilter activation switch allows hands-free grinding — push your portafilter handle into the switch to start grinding; it stops automatically at the preset dose. This leaves both hands free to hold the portafilter steady during grinding.

Programming Custom Doses

To save a custom grind time for a specific shot count: select the number of shots, adjust the GRIND AMOUNT dial to the desired time, run a test dose, and when the dose is correct, press and hold the PROGRAM button until the grinder beeps twice to confirm. The custom time is saved for that shot count only.

Pause Function

Press START during grinding to pause for 10 seconds — useful for collapsing a mound of grounds in the portafilter. Press START again within 10 seconds to resume grinding the remaining dose.

Grinding into the Grinds Container

Remove the portafilter cradle by sliding it out. Slide the grinds container with the cap open directly under the grind outlet. Select your SHOTS/CUPS amount and press START. The grinds container with lid can store pre-ground coffee for short periods. The airtight bean hopper (1 lb capacity) with locking system allows removal and storage of whole beans between sessions.

60 Grind Settings — Full Range

The Smart Grinder Pro covers the full range from espresso (settings 1–30) through drip (31–48) and French press (55–60). Within the espresso range, Breville recommends starting at setting 12 and adjusting in 1–2 step increments toward finer (lower) or coarser (higher) based on shot time and taste. The removable and adjustable upper burr can be repositioned with the included tool to extend the range if needed.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Weekly — Brush the Burrs

Unplug the grinder. Remove the hopper (turn 90° counterclockwise, lift). Use the included cleaning brush to sweep the upper and lower burrs, grinding chamber walls, and grounds outlet. Do not wash burrs or internal chamber with water.

Monthly — Hopper and Accessories

Hand-wash the hopper, hopper lid, portafilter cradles, grinds container, and container lid with warm soapy water. Rinse and dry completely before reinstalling. Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth.

Quarterly — Cleaning Tablets

Run grinder cleaning tablets (Grindz or equivalent) at a medium grind setting (approximately 30) to dissolve coffee oil buildup on the burr surfaces. Follow with 30g of beans to purge residue. Do not use rice in the grinder.

Upper Burr Cleaning

If grind consistency noticeably declines or the grinder sounds rougher than normal, remove the upper burr for a thorough cleaning using the adjustment tool. Brush the burr surfaces clean and wipe the grinding chamber with a dry cloth. Reinstall the upper burr, realign, and run a brief test grind before use.

Troubleshooting

Grinder Won't Start

Ensure the bean hopper is locked into position — the grinder will display a warning and disable operation if the hopper is not properly locked. Confirm the power cord is connected and the outlet is live.

Grind Too Coarse / Weak Extraction

Move to a finer grind setting. For espresso, start in the espresso range (settings 1–30) and adjust in 1–2 setting increments. Pull a test shot after each adjustment.

Grind Too Fine / No Flow

Move to a coarser grind setting. If the portafilter is completely blocked, jump 3–4 settings coarser and work back in.

Grinder Jammed

Turn off and unplug. Remove the hopper and check for foreign objects. Clear any compacted grounds from the burrs and chute using the included cleaning brush. Never use water inside the grinding chamber.

Inconsistent Dose

Adjust the grind time dial to increase or decrease dose. Pull the portafilter activation switch (BCG820) or press START to test the current dose, then fine-tune the grind time. Verify the bean hopper is adequately filled — a near-empty hopper affects feed consistency.
