What's In The Box
Breville Dual Boiler (BES920) espresso machine, 58mm stainless steel portafilter, Stainless steel milk jug, Integrated removable tamper, The Razor precision dose trimming tool, Allen key, Cleaning tool for steam wand, Cleaning disc, Espresso cleaning tablets, Descaling powder, Single wall filter baskets (1 cup & 2 cup), Dual wall filter baskets (1 cup & 2 cup), Water filter holder with filter, Water hardness test strip, Power cord

Setup & First Use

Before first use, remove all labels and packaging. The Dual Boiler has a top-fill 84 fl.oz (2.5L) water tank with an integrated water filter and backlit level indicator — fill by opening the top-fill lid or by removing the tank from the back. Remove the water filter bag, soak the filter for 5 minutes, install in the holder, and seat in the tank. Wash the portafilter, filter baskets, and milk jug with warm water and gentle dish soap.

Press POWER. The LCD will display 'Hrd3', prompting you to set your water hardness level using the included test strip. Dip the strip in your fill water for one minute, count the red squares, and enter the corresponding setting (Hrd1–Hrd5) using the MENU button. After setting hardness, the boilers fill for approximately 10 minutes. The machine beeps and all four buttons illuminate when ready.

The Dual Boiler has two dedicated stainless steel boilers — one for espresso extraction and one for steam — plus an actively heated 58mm group head with an embedded element for commercial-level thermal stability. This allows you to pull espresso and steam milk simultaneously with no temperature recovery between functions. Dual pumps maintain constant pressure in each circuit independently.

First flush: with the machine in standby, press 2 Cup to run water through the group head for 30 seconds. Open the Hot Water dial for 30 seconds, then open the Steam lever for 30 seconds. Repeat this cycle twice. Refill the tank and empty the drip tray before first use.

The machine has an Auto Start function to power on at a scheduled time, and an Auto Off function. Both are set through the LCD/MENU interface. The drop-down swivel foot under the drip tray allows the machine to be tilted upward for easier tank access.

Tutorials & Training

Dual Boiler — Simultaneous Espresso and Steam

Because the espresso and steam boilers operate independently, you can pull a shot and texture milk at the same time. Lock in the portafilter and start extraction with the 1 or 2 Cup button. Simultaneously, open the steam lever to full steam. When the shot is complete, close the steam lever and wipe the wand. No waiting for temperature recovery between functions — both boilers maintain their set temperatures continuously.

PID Temperature Control

The LCD displays current espresso boiler temperature. Use the MENU button to access temperature settings. You can set brew temperature in 1°F increments and program a temperature offset. Lighter roasts typically extract better at higher temperatures (200–205°F); darker roasts often prefer lower temperatures (190–197°F). The shot clock on the LCD shows extraction duration for each shot.

Pre-Infusion

Low-pressure pre-infusion is programmable through the MENU. Pre-infusion applies gentle water pressure at the start of extraction to wet and expand the puck before full pressure — this reduces channeling, especially with lighter, less dense pucks. Adjust the duration in 1-second increments; 3–6 seconds is a common starting range.

Over-Pressure Valve (OPV)

The OPV limits maximum extraction pressure. The factory default is set for optimum espresso. If you want to experiment with lower extraction pressure for specific roasts, the OPV can be adjusted using the Allen key. Make small adjustments and test before proceeding.

The 58mm Group Head and Portafilter

The Dual Boiler uses a commercial-sized 58mm portafilter — the same standard as most professional espresso machines. The heated group head with embedded element maintains stable temperature across the extraction, eliminating the temperature fluctuation common with thermocoil systems. Preheat the portafilter by locking it in the group head for 1 minute before extraction.

Manual Steam Wand

The stainless steel 360° steam wand has a 3-hole steam tip for silkier foam texture. Purge before and after steaming. Submerge the tip near the milk surface, open the steam lever, stretch milk at the surface then swirl to heat. Target 140–150°F. Close the lever and wipe immediately. The separate 32 fl.oz (950ml) steam boiler delivers high-volume, instant steam.

Auto Start and Auto Off

Set an Auto Start time through the MENU to have the machine reach operating temperature by your morning routine. The machine will beep and illuminate when ready. Set Auto Off to have the machine shut off between 10 minutes and 8 hours after last use. Both functions are accessed via the LCD/MENU interface.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily — After Each Session

Remove and discard the puck, rinse the portafilter and basket, wipe the group head gasket and shower screen, purge and wipe the steam wand. Empty and rinse the drip tray.

Weekly — Cleaning Cycle

When the CLEAN/DESCALE indicator illuminates, run the group head cleaning cycle using the included cleaning disc and espresso cleaning tablet. Insert the disc into the portafilter, add a tablet, lock in the group head, and follow the on-machine prompts through the cleaning cycle. This clears coffee oils from the group solenoid.

Weekly — Steam Wand

If the steam tip holes are blocked, use the included cleaning tool to clear them. Soak the tip in warm water if milk residue has dried on the wand.

Monthly — Water Filter

Replace the water filter every 3 months or after 40L of use. The LCD will show a 'NEW FILTER' alert when replacement is due.

Descaling

Descale when the CLEAN/DESCALE indicator signals a descaling cycle is needed. Turn the machine off, allow to cool for at least 1 hour, and ensure the drip tray is empty before beginning. Use Breville descaling powder — follow the step-by-step procedure in the instruction book. Do not use vinegar. After descaling, run multiple rinse cycles before brewing.

Troubleshooting

No Coffee Flow / Very Slow Flow

Grind is too fine, dose is too high, or tamp is too firm. Adjust grind 1–2 settings coarser, reduce dose by 1–2g, or reduce tamping pressure. If using single wall baskets, the grind and dose must be dialed in precisely — switch to dual wall baskets for more forgiving extraction while dialing in.

Coffee Running Too Fast / Weak Flavor

Grind is too coarse, dose is too low, or tamp is too light. Adjust grind 1–2 settings finer and ensure the dose fills the basket correctly. Use the Razor trimming tool (if included) to verify dose level is correct before tamping.

Espresso Too Bitter

Over-extraction — grind coarser, reduce dose, or lower brew temperature. Check that the machine has fully heated before pulling a shot; pulling on a cold machine extracts unevenly. Also verify the group head and portafilter are clean — residual oils cause bitterness.

Espresso Not Hot Enough

Preheat your cups — place them on the cup warming tray or fill with hot water and discard before brewing. Ensure the machine has fully heated before extracting. Run a blank shot (no coffee) through the group head to bring it to temperature if it has been idle.

No Steam / Weak Steam

Allow the machine to fully heat to steam-ready temperature before attempting to steam. Check that the steam wand tip holes are not blocked — use the cleaning pin to clear them. If steam pressure has decreased over time, descaling is likely needed.

CLEAN / DESCALE Light On

Run the prompted cleaning or descaling cycle immediately. Do not continue brewing through a maintenance alert — the Dual Boiler requires cleaning to maintain performance and component longevity. Follow the on-machine prompts or refer to the Care & Cleaning section of the instruction book.

Machine Won't Start

Ensure the water tank is filled above the minimum line and properly seated. Confirm the portafilter is fully locked into the group head — the machine will not start if the portafilter is not secured. Check that the power cord is fully connected.
