Setup & First Use

Before first use, remove all labels and packaging. Remove the water tank from the back of the machine, take out the plastic bag containing the water filter and holder, and wash the tank, portafilter, filter baskets, and milk jug with warm water and gentle dish soap. Rinse and dry. Soak the water filter in cold water for 5 minutes, rinse the holder, insert the filter, and install in the tank.

The Barista Express has an 8.8oz (250g) bean hopper with a locking system for easy removal. Fill with fresh whole beans and lock the hopper into position. The integrated conical burr grinder has a Grind Size selector (dial) and Grind Amount dial. The Grind Size selector has espresso-range settings from fine to coarse; the Grind Amount dial adjusts how much coffee is dispensed per shot. Use the FILTER SIZE button to tell the grinder whether you're using a 1 Cup or 2 Cup basket so it doses the correct amount automatically.

The 67 fl.oz (2L) water tank includes a replaceable water filter — replace every 3 months or 40 liters to maintain taste and reduce scale. The machine has a cup warming tray on top. The espresso pressure gauge on the front monitors extraction pressure — aim for the shaded zone (8–10 bar) during extraction.

First use: fill the tank, plug in, press POWER. Select 2 Cup and allow water to flush through the group head and steam wand for the initial rinse cycle.

Tutorials & Training

Integrated Grinder — Grind Size and Amount

Start with the Grind Size selector at the middle of the espresso range. Insert your portafilter into the hands-free grinding cradle, select 1 Cup or 2 Cup with the FILTER SIZE button, and activate the grinder by pressing the portafilter handle into the activation switch. The grinder doses automatically and stops when the correct amount has dispensed. Adjust grind size in 1-step increments and test the shot before adjusting further — changes take effect after a brief purge of the previous grind from the chamber.

The Dosing Funnel and Razor

The included Dosing Funnel 54 fits on top of the portafilter and catches stray grounds during grinding, keeping the bench clean. After grinding, remove the funnel and tamp the coffee. Then use the Razor trimming tool to level the puck precisely before locking into the group head.

Espresso Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge shows extraction pressure in real time. Before pulling a shot it reads near 0. During extraction it should rise into the shaded zone (approximately 8–10 bar). Consistently under-pressure indicates grind too coarse or under-dosing; consistently over-pressure indicates grind too fine or over-dosing.

Pulling a Shot

Grind into the portafilter using the hands-free cradle, distribute the grounds, tamp with the integrated tamper, and use the Razor to trim the dose. Lock the portafilter into the group head firmly. Press 1 Cup or 2 Cup to begin extraction with low-pressure pre-infusion followed by full extraction. Shots can be reprogrammed volumetrically or overridden manually.

Manual Steam Wand

The Barista Express has a 360° swivel commercial-style steam wand. Purge before and after steaming. Submerge the tip near the milk surface and open the Steam/Hot Water dial to the STEAM position. Stretch milk for the first few seconds at the surface, then submerge slightly deeper to swirl and heat to 140–150°F. Close the dial fully and wipe the wand immediately.

Dry Puck Feature

After extraction, the machine removes excess moisture from the puck before the shot ends, producing a drier puck that falls cleanly out of the basket with one knock. This keeps the bench cleaner and makes disposal easier.

Adjustable Upper Burr

If the full espresso grind range doesn't provide enough adjustment for a specific bean, the upper burr can be repositioned using the included Allen key. This extends the grind range in the fine direction. Make one adjustment at a time and test before adjusting further. Instructions are in the Barista Express instruction book.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily — After Each Session

After each brewing session, remove and knock out the spent puck, rinse the portafilter and basket under hot water, and wipe the group head gasket and shower screen with a damp cloth. Purge the steam wand for 2–3 seconds then wipe immediately with a damp cloth. Empty and rinse the drip tray.

Weekly — Group Head Cleaning Cycle

When the CLEAN/DESCALE indicator illuminates on the Barista Express, run the automatic cleaning cycle using the included cleaning disc and Breville espresso cleaning tablet. Follow the on-machine prompts or the Care & Cleaning section of the instruction book. This cycle flushes coffee oils from the group head and solenoid valve. Do not skip prompted cleaning cycles — oil buildup causes bitter flavors and shortens component life.

Monthly — Water Filter

Replace the water filter in the tank every 3 months or after 40 liters (approximately 10.6 US gallons) of use. Soak the new filter in cold water for 5 minutes, rinse the holder, insert the filter, and reinstall in the tank. Keeping the filter fresh reduces descaling frequency and improves taste.

Descaling

Descale when the CLEAN/DESCALE light illuminates on the Barista Express or when you notice reduced steam power, slower heating, or temperature instability. Use Breville's descaling powder or a Breville-recommended descaling solution. Follow the descaling procedure in the instruction book. Do not use vinegar — it can damage internal components. After descaling, run at least 3 full rinse cycles with fresh water before brewing.

Steam Wand

If the steam wand tip becomes blocked, use the included steam wand cleaning tool (pin) to clear the holes. For milk residue buildup, soak the tip in warm water and use a damp cloth to wipe clean. Never allow milk to dry on the steam wand — wipe immediately after every use.

Portafilter and Baskets

Wash the portafilter and filter baskets by hand with warm soapy water. Do not put the portafilter, tamper, or any espresso accessories in the dishwasher.

Troubleshooting

No Coffee Flow / Very Slow Flow

Grind is too fine, dose is too high, or tamp is too firm. Adjust grind 1–2 settings coarser, reduce dose by 1–2g, or reduce tamping pressure. If using single wall baskets, the grind and dose must be dialed in precisely — switch to dual wall baskets for more forgiving extraction while dialing in.

Coffee Running Too Fast / Weak Flavor

Grind is too coarse, dose is too low, or tamp is too light. Adjust grind 1–2 settings finer and ensure the dose fills the basket correctly. Use the Razor trimming tool (if included) to verify dose level is correct before tamping.

Espresso Too Bitter

Over-extraction — grind coarser, reduce dose, or lower brew temperature. Check that the machine has fully heated before pulling a shot; pulling on a cold machine extracts unevenly. Also verify the group head and portafilter are clean — residual oils cause bitterness.

Espresso Not Hot Enough

Preheat your cups — place them on the cup warming tray or fill with hot water and discard before brewing. Ensure the machine has fully heated before extracting. Run a blank shot (no coffee) through the group head to bring it to temperature if it has been idle.

No Steam / Weak Steam

Allow the machine to fully heat to steam-ready temperature before attempting to steam. Check that the steam wand tip holes are not blocked — use the cleaning pin to clear them. If steam pressure has decreased over time, descaling is likely needed.

CLEAN / DESCALE Light On

Run the prompted cleaning or descaling cycle immediately. Do not continue brewing through a maintenance alert — the Barista Express requires cleaning to maintain performance and component longevity. Follow the on-machine prompts or refer to the Care & Cleaning section of the instruction book.

Machine Won't Start

Ensure the water tank is filled above the minimum line and properly seated. Confirm the portafilter is fully locked into the group head — the machine will not start if the portafilter is not secured. Check that the power cord is fully connected.
