Integrated Grinder — Grind Size and Amount
Start with the Grind Size selector at the middle of the espresso range. Insert your portafilter into the hands-free grinding cradle, select 1 Cup or 2 Cup with the FILTER SIZE button, and activate the grinder by pressing the portafilter handle into the activation switch. The grinder doses automatically and stops when the correct amount has dispensed. Adjust grind size in 1-step increments and test the shot before adjusting further — changes take effect after a brief purge of the previous grind from the chamber.
The Dosing Funnel and Razor
The included Dosing Funnel 54 fits on top of the portafilter and catches stray grounds during grinding, keeping the bench clean. After grinding, remove the funnel and tamp the coffee. Then use the Razor trimming tool to level the puck precisely before locking into the group head.
Espresso Pressure Gauge
The pressure gauge shows extraction pressure in real time. Before pulling a shot it reads near 0. During extraction it should rise into the shaded zone (approximately 8–10 bar). Consistently under-pressure indicates grind too coarse or under-dosing; consistently over-pressure indicates grind too fine or over-dosing.
Pulling a Shot
Grind into the portafilter using the hands-free cradle, distribute the grounds, tamp with the integrated tamper, and use the Razor to trim the dose. Lock the portafilter into the group head firmly. Press 1 Cup or 2 Cup to begin extraction with low-pressure pre-infusion followed by full extraction. Shots can be reprogrammed volumetrically or overridden manually.
Manual Steam Wand
The Barista Express has a 360° swivel commercial-style steam wand. Purge before and after steaming. Submerge the tip near the milk surface and open the Steam/Hot Water dial to the STEAM position. Stretch milk for the first few seconds at the surface, then submerge slightly deeper to swirl and heat to 140–150°F. Close the dial fully and wipe the wand immediately.
Dry Puck Feature
After extraction, the machine removes excess moisture from the puck before the shot ends, producing a drier puck that falls cleanly out of the basket with one knock. This keeps the bench cleaner and makes disposal easier.
Adjustable Upper Burr
If the full espresso grind range doesn't provide enough adjustment for a specific bean, the upper burr can be repositioned using the included Allen key. This extends the grind range in the fine direction. Make one adjustment at a time and test before adjusting further. Instructions are in the Barista Express instruction book.
