Breville Oracle Jet Espresso Machine

Breville Oracle Jet Espresso Machine

The Breville Oracle Jet brings fast heat up times and temperature stability both in one complete package. Built with dual thermojet heating elements—one for heating water and the other for heating the grouphead—the Jet promises heat-up in seconds and full-path temperature management. For grinding, Baratza-designed burrs and an Oracle-style 58mm auto-dosing tamper handles your puck prep, while milk steaming is managed by a MilQ smart steam wand. All this technology is controlled with a bright, responsive touchscreen, which features customizable drink recipes—including new cold espresso and cold coffee options. The Jet's upgraded control panel also opens up new smart systems; like Barista Guidance to help improve your shot quality and an auto-queue function that starts milk steaming as soon as your coffee finishes extraction. Other mindful features, like a top-access water fill port and pop-out casters to help move the machine on your countertop round out this polished design.

What's In The Box
Breville Oracle Jet (BES985) espresso machine with integrated grinder, 58mm stainless steel portafilter, Stainless steel milk jug, The Knock Box 10, Grind outlet brush and tamp removal magnet, Cleaning brush, Cleaning tool for steam wand, Hex key, Cleaning disc, Espresso cleaning tablets, Descaling powder, Single wall filter baskets (1 cup pre-installed and 2 cup), Water filter holder with filter, Water hardness test strip, Power cord

Setup & First Use

Before first use, remove all labels and packaging. The Oracle Jet has both a front top-fill port and a removable rear water tank. The rear tank latch is released to remove the tank — fill it through the top-fill lid for convenience, or pull the tank for full cleaning. Remove the water filter bag, soak for 5 minutes, install in the holder, and seat in the tank. Wash the portafilter, baskets, and milk jug with warm water and gentle dish soap.

Press POWER. The 5-inch HD touchscreen guides you through initial setup including Wi-Fi connection (optional but recommended for firmware updates) and water hardness testing. Use the included test strip — enter the result on the touchscreen. If water hardness tests at 4 or 5, switch to filtered water.

Fill the 340g (12oz) bean hopper with fresh whole beans and lock it. Set the Grind Size dial to the midpoint as a starting position. The Oracle Jet automatically grinds, doses, and tamps 22 grams of coffee into the 58mm portafilter for each shot. After setup, run 2–3 test shots before dialing in — the system recalibrates over the first few shots.

The Oracle Jet uses ThermoJet heating for fast heat-up and a ThermoJet-heated group head for thermally stable extraction. The Auto MilQ steam wand textures milk automatically with settings for dairy, soy, almond, and oat milk.

Tutorials & Training

Auto Grind, Dose and Tamp

The Oracle Jet grinds and tamps automatically — place the portafilter under the grind outlet and the machine does the rest. The auto-tamp delivers a consistent 22g dose with every shot. The grind outlet brush and tamp removal magnet are used for cleaning the auto-tamp mechanism.

5-Inch HD Touchscreen

Swipe the touchscreen to select drinks: Espresso, Americano, Latte, Flat White, Cappuccino, Cold Brew, and Cold Espresso. Each drink is fully customizable — brew time or volumetric control, temperature settings, and milk texturing preferences. Barista Guidance can be enabled in Settings to automatically detect over or under-extracted shots and suggest grind adjustments.

Barista Guidance

When enabled, Barista Guidance analyzes each extraction and prompts a grind size adjustment if the shot is outside the ideal range. Enable it in Settings > Drink Settings. It is most useful when learning a new bean or after switching roast levels.

Cold Coffee Modes

Cold Brew extracts at a lower temperature to reduce acidic notes and produce a smoother, mellower flavor. Cold Espresso extracts espresso at lower temperature for a full-flavored shot that is softer and lighter in body than a standard shot. Both modes are accessible from the drinks menu.

Auto Queue

Auto Queue allows you to sequence the next function during milk-based drinks. Queue milk texturing after brewing (brew first, then steam), or queue brewing after steaming (steam first, then brew). Select from the drink screen — useful for workflow when making drinks alone.

Auto MilQ Steam Wand — Dairy and Non-Dairy

Select your milk type on the touchscreen (dairy, soy, almond, or oat) — the machine optimizes texturing parameters for each. Pour cold milk into the stainless jug, submerge the wand, and tap the milk icon on screen. Temperature is adjustable from 113–167°F (45–75°C) in the settings, with 8 texture levels. The wand auto-purges when returned to the lowered position.

Wi-Fi and Software Updates

Connect the Oracle Jet to your home Wi-Fi network during setup or via Settings. Breville releases software updates that may change functionality and improve performance. The touchscreen will notify you when an update is available. Always install updates on a stable network connection.

Adjustable Upper Burr

If the standard grind range doesn't accommodate a specific bean at the extremes, the upper burr can be repositioned using the hex key to extend the range. Make one small adjustment at a time and run several test shots before adjusting further. Full instructions are in the Oracle Jet instruction book.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily — After Each Session

Discard the puck, rinse the portafilter and basket, wipe the group head and tamp outlet area, purge and wipe the Auto MilQ wand, empty the drip tray.

Weekly — Cleaning Cycles

Run the Clean Group Head cycle when prompted by the machine or from Settings > Maintenance > Clean Group Head. Use the cleaning disc and espresso cleaning tablet. Run the Clean Steam Wand cycle from Settings > Maintenance > Clean Steam Wand periodically to clear the auto-purge pathway of milk residue.

Burrs and Grind Outlet

Use the included cleaning brush to clear loose grounds from around the burrs and the grind outlet. Use the grind outlet brush and tamp removal magnet to safely access and clean the auto-tamp mechanism without touching moving parts.

Water Filter and Descaling

Replace the water filter every 3 months. Descale when the touchscreen prompts a descaling cycle. The Oracle Jet will guide you through the descaling procedure via the touchscreen. Use Breville descaling powder. Allow the machine to cool fully before beginning descaling.

Troubleshooting

No Coffee Flow / Very Slow Flow

Grind is too fine, dose is too high, or tamp is too firm. Adjust grind 1–2 settings coarser, reduce dose by 1–2g, or reduce tamping pressure. If using single wall baskets, the grind and dose must be dialed in precisely — switch to dual wall baskets for more forgiving extraction while dialing in.

Coffee Running Too Fast / Weak Flavor

Grind is too coarse, dose is too low, or tamp is too light. Adjust grind 1–2 settings finer and ensure the dose fills the basket correctly. Use the Razor trimming tool (if included) to verify dose level is correct before tamping.

Espresso Too Bitter

Over-extraction — grind coarser, reduce dose, or lower brew temperature. Check that the machine has fully heated before pulling a shot; pulling on a cold machine extracts unevenly. Also verify the group head and portafilter are clean — residual oils cause bitterness.

Espresso Not Hot Enough

Preheat your cups — place them on the cup warming tray or fill with hot water and discard before brewing. Ensure the machine has fully heated before extracting. Run a blank shot (no coffee) through the group head to bring it to temperature if it has been idle.

No Steam / Weak Steam

Allow the machine to fully heat to steam-ready temperature before attempting to steam. Check that the steam wand tip holes are not blocked — use the cleaning pin to clear them. If steam pressure has decreased over time, descaling is likely needed.

CLEAN / DESCALE Light On

Run the prompted cleaning or descaling cycle immediately. Do not continue brewing through a maintenance alert — the Oracle Jet requires cleaning to maintain performance and component longevity. Follow the on-machine prompts or refer to the Care & Cleaning section of the instruction book.

Machine Won't Start

Ensure the water tank is filled above the minimum line and properly seated. Confirm the portafilter is fully locked into the group head — the machine will not start if the portafilter is not secured. Check that the power cord is fully connected.
