Setup & First Use

Before using the Breville Smart Kettle Luxe for the first time, remove and safely discard all packaging materials and any promotional labels attached to the kettle. The kettle operates at 120V / 1500W and is intended for household use only. Place the power base on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface and maintain a minimum 8-inch clearance from walls, curtains, and other heat-sensitive materials. Plug the power cord into a grounded 3-prong outlet.

Know Your Kettle

  • Soft Opening Lid with Viewing Window: Opens gently via the lid release button on the stainless steel handle to release steam and prevent splash-back. Do not open the lid during operation.
  • Removable Scale Filter: Mesh filter inside the kettle that captures mineral deposits. Open the lid and slide the filter up and out to remove for cleaning.
  • Dual Water Windows: BPA-free water level indicators on both sides of the kettle. Always fill between the MIN and MAX marks.
  • 5 Temperature Settings: 175°F (green/white tea), 195°F (oolong), 200°F (French press), 205°F (black/herbal tea), and 212°F (full boil).
  • KEEP WARM Button: Holds the selected temperature for 20 minutes after heating.
  • START/CANCEL Button: Illuminates red during heating. Press to start or cancel the heating cycle.
  • Multi-Directional Base: 360° cordless base with cord storage wrap. The kettle lifts and replaces in any direction.

First Use Flush

Fill the kettle to the maximum level with cold tap water. Select the BOIL 212°F button and press START/CANCEL to bring it to a full boil. Discard the water. The kettle is now ready for use.

Basic Operation

  1. Remove the kettle from the power base, press the lid release button to open, and fill with the desired amount of water between the MIN and MAX lines.
  2. Close the lid firmly, then place the kettle securely on the power base and plug in. The START/CANCEL and 212° button surrounds will illuminate white for one minute and a beep will sound for two seconds.
  3. Select your desired temperature by pressing one of the five temperature buttons. The selected button and the START/CANCEL surround will illuminate white.
  4. Press START/CANCEL to begin heating. The button surround illuminates red. Do not remove the kettle from the base during operation.
  5. When the water reaches the selected temperature, 3 beeps will sound, the START/CANCEL light will switch off, and the selected temperature button will remain illuminated for 1 minute.
  6. Ensure the kettle has fully switched off before lifting it from the base.

Note: If START/CANCEL is pressed before selecting a temperature, the kettle defaults to 212°F. The kettle also defaults to 212°F when plugged in after being unplugged, but will remember the last selected temperature if it remains plugged in between uses.

Tutorials & Training

Choosing the Right Temperature

The Smart Kettle Luxe's five preset temperatures are tuned for specific tea and coffee brewing styles. Using water that is too hot for delicate leaves can scald them, resulting in bitterness. Using water that is too cool can leave tea flat and under-extracted. Breville's recommended temperature guide is:

  • 175°F — Green tea (Gyokuro, Sencha, Dragonwell) and white tea (Silver Needle, White Peony)
  • 195°F — Oolong teas (Formosa Oolong, Da Hong Pao, Monkey Picked Oolong)
  • 200°F — French press coffee and other immersion brew methods
  • 205°F — Black tea (English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Assam, Darjeeling) and herbal/rooibos blends
  • 212°F — Full boil for robust black teas, herbal infusions, and general use

These are guidelines — personal taste, tea brand, and tea age may all influence the ideal temperature and steep time. Always follow the specific directions on your tea or coffee packaging as a starting point.

Using KEEP WARM

The KEEP WARM function holds the kettle at your selected temperature for 20 minutes — useful for second servings or when you need extra time before pouring. To activate: press your desired temperature button, press KEEP WARM, then press START/CANCEL to begin heating. KEEP WARM can also be activated at any point during the heating cycle, or within one minute after the cycle completes. If the kettle is lifted from the power base during KEEP WARM, it automatically switches off. Note: when the 212°F setting is used with KEEP WARM, the water will hold at approximately 200°F (not 212°F) during the 20-minute hold.

Cordless Pouring

The Smart Kettle Luxe sits on a 360° multi-directional base, so the kettle can be lifted and poured from any direction. The power cord attaches to the base only — never to the kettle itself. Wrap the cord around the cord storage on the underside of the base to keep the countertop clear. Do not move or tilt the kettle while it is actively heating on the base.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Important Safety Note

Always unplug the power base from the outlet before cleaning. Never immerse the kettle base, power base, power cord, or power plug in water or allow moisture to contact these parts. Do not use chemicals, steel wool, abrasive cleaners, or alkaline cleaning agents on any part of the kettle — use a soft cloth and mild detergent only.

Scale Filter

Open the lid and slide the removable mesh filter upward and out of the kettle. Rinse the filter under hot running water and rub gently with a cleaning cloth or brush to remove scale deposits. To reinstall, slide the filter back down into the slot behind the spout and push it firmly into position. Inspect the filter periodically — if it is damaged, replace it. Contact Breville at breville.com or call 866-273-8455 for a replacement.

Exterior Cleaning

Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth, then polish with a soft dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or steel wool on the stainless steel body.

Descaling

Regular descaling is essential to maintain kettle performance. The frequency depends on usage and local water hardness — areas with hard water will require more frequent descaling. Scale buildup can discolour the interior and may damage the heating element; allowing it to go unaddressed may also affect warranty coverage. Breville recommends their Kettle Cleaner product, available by contacting Breville Consumer Support at 866-273-8455.

To descale with a vinegar solution:

  1. Fill the kettle two-thirds full with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water. Bring to a boil, then allow to stand overnight.
  2. Empty the solution. Fill with fresh clean water, bring to a full boil, and discard. Repeat this clean-water boil once more. The kettle is now ready for use.

Storage

Ensure the kettle is unplugged, clean, and fully dry before storing. Close and lock the lid securely. Wrap the power cord around the cord storage on the underside of the power base. Store upright on the power base. Do not place anything on top of the kettle.

Troubleshooting

Kettle Will Not Start

Confirm the power base is plugged into a functioning grounded outlet. Ensure the kettle is fully and securely seated on the power base — the kettle will not heat if it is not properly positioned. Check that the water level is at or above the MIN line; the boil dry protection prevents operation with insufficient water.

Kettle Switches Off Before Reaching Temperature

The Smart Kettle Luxe has automatic boil dry protection that shuts off the heating element if the water level is too low. If the kettle switches off unexpectedly, unplug it and allow it to cool completely before refilling and trying again — the safety device resets automatically once cooled. Ensure the water is filled above the MIN line.

KEEP WARM Not Holding Temperature

If the kettle is lifted from the power base at any point during the KEEP WARM cycle, the function automatically cancels. Replace the kettle on the base and reactivate if needed. Confirm the KEEP WARM button was pressed before START/CANCEL — activating it after the cycle has already completed is only possible within the first minute after heating ends.

Water Has an Off Taste or Odor

This is most commonly caused by mineral scale buildup. Run the descaling process described in the Cleaning & Maintenance section above. If taste issues persist after descaling, check whether the scale filter needs replacing. Also ensure you are starting with fresh, cold tap water rather than reusing water that has been boiled multiple times.

Scale Filter Is Clogged or Damaged

Remove and rinse the filter under hot running water. If it remains clogged, soak briefly in a mild descaling solution, rinse thoroughly, and reinstall. If the filter is cracked, torn, or deformed, replace it. Contact Breville Consumer Support at 866-273-8455 or visit breville.com for a replacement.

Lid Is Difficult to Open

The Soft Opening lid is designed to open slowly and gently — this is intentional. Press the lid release button firmly on the handle. If the lid is stiff or not releasing smoothly, check for scale deposits or debris around the lid mechanism and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Never force the lid open.
